The Faculty for humanities, sports and educational science has a vacancy from 01.01.2020 for a position as PhD Research Fellow within the theme “Physically active lessons at school – a comparative study between Estonia and Norway”.

The position is located at the Department of sport, physical education and outdoor sciences. Main work place will be at campus Bø, with shorter or longer periods at University of Tartu. The PhD-fellow will be included in the researcher group Health and Exercise in a Lifecourse Perspective at USN.

The employment period will be three years of full time with no teaching obligations, and there is a premise for employment that the PhD-fellow is enrolled in USN’s PhD-program in pedagogical resources and learning processes (PEDRES) within three months of accession in the position.

About the research theme:

Physically active lessons at school is one of several methods recommended by the World Health Organization to increase school-based physical activity for children and adolescents. The PhD-fellow will conduct a comparative study between schools that have implemented physically active lessons in the projects “Healthy and active kids in Telemark” (Norway) and “Schools in Motion” (Estonia). The aim of the project is to examine and further develop the use of physically active lessons in these two countries.

The applicant is free to select a proper theoretical framework, but the project and the framework must be related to pedagogical resources and learning processes as described in the PhD-program. The application must include a project description of maximum five pages including references where research questions, theoretical framework and proper methodological choices and data analyses are presented and reasoned. Data collection in both Norway and Estonia will be necessary.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a relevant Master degree within sports, physical education, educational science or similar. The degree must be accomplished before application deadline, and with grade B or higher.

The employment period will be three years of full time with no teaching obligations. The applicant must show skills in independent and focused work and at the same time be motivated to share knowledge and collaborate with other researchers. Personal skills and suitability for the position will be emphasized. High level of oral and written skills in English is a prerequisite for employment.

Salary

PhD Research Fellow (code 1017): NOK 479 600 a year. Further promotion will be based on time served in the position.

In special cases, employment in code 1378 (NOK 436 900 – 600 200 a year) may be considered.

A statutory contribution to the state pension plan will be deducted from the employee’s salary.

Additional information

Appointment to the position will be carried out by The Appointments Board for PhD Research Fellows. An expert assessment of applicants will be carried out. Short-listed candidates will be called in for interviews and must be prepared to present and discuss their projects.
