A two year full time Postdoctoral Research Fellow is available at the Department of Pharmacology, Institute of Clinical Medicine, Faculty ofMedicine, University of Oslo (UiO). For more information, please follow this link.

More about the position

You will be a key member in a team working on preclinical Alzheimer’s disease drug development by targeting the major genetic risk factor Apolipoprotein E (ApoE). The appointee will work at Department of Pharmacology, in a research group with significant experience in the research field. The project is collaborative, involving researchers at the Swedish biopharma company BioArctic AB, the project financier.

One main project objective is drug target validation i.e. develop and use disease models to gain increased knowledge on biological effects of aspecific pharmacological intervention in ApoE-biology on Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis. The other main objective is to design and validate experimental systems and then use them to generate predictive pharmacological efficacy and side effect readout data on drug candidates.

You will learn various experimental techniques used to study Alzheimer’s disease. This will occur in an academic setting and thus fully compatible with academic career development e.g. publishing. You will gain great insights and experience on the drug development process, an asset to anyone considering a future career in the biotech sector.

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to complete the project in the course of the employment period.

Qualification requirements

• Applicants must have a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree that is relevant to the announced position. Successful candidates must have submitted their doctoral thesis prior to the application closing date. Appointment is dependent on an approved public defense of the doctoral thesis.
• Background experiences relevant to the project e.g. PhD and/or first postdoctoral position in pharmacology, neuroscience, biochemistry, molecular biology or equivalent is required.
• The candidate must have excellent command of written and oral English.
• Experience with cell culturing, including neuronal and/or glial primary cell cultures
• Experience studying protein structure and function with molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysical and/or microscopic techniques
• Knowledge and experimental experience studying protein aggregation
• Good theoretical knowledge on the brain and preferably also neurodegenerative disease
• FELASA C accreditation allowing work with animals is an asset

• Experimental proficiency, accuracy and accountability
• Initiative and ability to independently plan new experiments
• Good problem solving ability i.e. analytical skills and relevant theoretical knowledge
