Postdoctoral fellow in Biomaterials Science

Deadline: 16.11.2020

Universitetet i Oslo

The University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest and highest ranked educational and research institution, with 28 000 students and 7000 employees. With its broad range of academic disciplines and internationally recognised research communities, UiO is an important contributor to society.

The Faculty of Dentistry is one of the leading odontological research and educational institutions in Europe. The faculty's research groups contribute top research within several odontological fields.

In addition to educating dentists and dental hygienists, the Faculty has Ph.D program and professional-oriented specialist education. The Faculty holds significant competence in the various research and clinical disciplines, with good interdisciplinary collaboration. It is a modern faculty with approximately 450 students and approximately 450 employees. The faculty is also Norway's largest dental clinic with approximately 55,000 patient visits a year. The Faculty of Dentistry has two departments: Institute of Clinical Dentistry and Department of Oral Biology.

Job description

A three-year postdoctoral fellowship in biomaterials science with focus on investigating the biological performance of medical biomaterials in vitro available at the Department of Biomaterials, University of Oslo.

This postdoctoral fellowship is part of a research project “Multifunctional tannic acid nanocoatings for bone-anchored implants with reduced infection risk” funded by the Research Council of Norway. In this project, we focus on developing substrate-independent antioxidant and antibacterial polyphenolic nanocoatings on implant surfaces and evaluate their ability to prevent bacterial infections and inflammation around bone-anchored implants. Our main aim is to understand the reaction mechanisms resulting in the coating formation and how the reaction conditions affect the physical and chemical properties of the formed polyphenolic coatings. As the biological effect of the polyphenol coatings is strongly dependent on their chemistry, thorough understanding of the chemical properties of the formed coatings is essential for designing infection-resistant implant surfaces that can promote wound healing and bone formation around the implant, while simultaneously reducing bacterial colonisation on the implant surface.

More about the position

The appointment is a fulltime position and is made for a period of up to three years

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Qualification requirements

We seek a person with strong motivation and skillset for research in characterisation of biological performance of medical biomaterials. The postdoctoral fellow will be involved in advanced characterisation of biomaterial surfaces and the interaction between the material surface and the physiological environment within the body.

A prospective candidate for this position

  • must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in biomaterials science, tissue engineering, biochemistry or cell biology with focus on biomaterials, or equivalent. Doctoral thesis must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defence are eligible for appointment.
  • must have a strong background in investigating cell-material interactions, especially using primary human cells, and be skilled in cell culture and molecular biology methods and in general cell culture laboratory practices
  • experience with microbiology and biofilm assays is considered beneficial
  • has a strong academic track record
  • has good team-working and networking skills
  • has good communication skills, including fluent oral and written English
  • has availability to go abroad for short-term scientific missions

We offer

  • work in a collaborative research project with international partners located in Denmark, Portugal, and California, USA
  • salary NOK 526 000– 608 200 per annum depending on qualifications in position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow (position code 1352)
