The department employs approximately 100 people; 49 scientific staff, 35 doctoral and post-doctoral students, and 16 administrative/technical staff. The number of students is approximately 900.

Job description

Applications are invited for a four-year position as PhD Research Fellow in the research project ‘Teamwork analytics for training collaborative problem solving in professional higher education’ (TeamLearn). The position is affiliated to the research group “Knowledge, Learning and Governance in Higher Education and Work’ (HEDWORK) at the Department of Education, Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Oslo.

The TeamLearn project is a four-year research project funded by the Research Council of Norway. TeamLearn studies how digital technologies, multimodal learning analytics and automated feedback can be employed to study collaborative problem solving and team-based learning in higher education. Student teams from medical interprofessional, nursing and legal education are studied while they solve complex problems, for example, a patient diagnosis, a critical intensive care situation or a complex court case. The project will develop a multimodal learning analytics dashboard (MAD), which visualizes multimodal data as feedback on the team activities. The PhD project should overall contribute to a better understanding of students’ collaborative problem solving in a particular disciplinary higher education context, and of how team-based learning can be guided through use of automated feedback facilitated by a multimodal analytics dashboard. The focus can be on, for example, students’ collaborative problem solving in a disciplinary domain, ways of generating and making use of feedback through learning analytics dashboards, or learning designs entailing learning analytics enhanced team-based learning. The candidate is expected to conduct empirical studies in one of the selected cases from the TeamLearn project, to collect and analyze data from students’ collaborative work, and to participate in co-design meetings as well as joint project activities.

The announced PhD position will be connected to the research group HEDWORK. The group comprises researchers with different interdisciplinary backgrounds and offers an internationally oriented and stimulating research environment, with a connection to research communities in learning sciences and educational technology, and educational research worldwide.

More about the position

The fellowship period is up to 4 years, with 3 years devoted to research education. The position entails a compulsory work load of 25 % that consists of teaching and supervision duties and research assistance.

The research fellow must take part in the Faculty of Educational Sciences’ approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The applicant must, in collaboration with her/his supervisor, within 6 months after employment, have worked out a complete project description to be attached to the application for admission to the doctoral program. For more information, please see the TeamLearn project webpage.

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in education or another field with relevance to higher education research (e.g., educational sciences, educational psychology, social or behavioral sciences, educational technology, educational measurement, professional degrees with relevance to the project). The master’s degree (120 ECTS) must have a minimum grade B (ECTS grading scale) or equivalent. The Master’s degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS Documented experience with research within the educational field, preferably learning sciences or educational psychology.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Reasonable communication skills in a Scandinavian language
