The Department of Teacher Education and School Research (ILS) is one of three departments at The Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Oslo.

ILS is a leading institution in the fields of subject didactics, school leadership and practice-relevant school research. It hosts Norway's first Centre of Excellence in Education, ProTed – a joint project between the University of Oslo and the University of Tromsø.


EKVA (Unit for quantitative analysis in education) is also part of the department, as well as four interfaculty research groups (CLEG, TEPEC, SISCO and LEA).

The Department enrols 400 students in the Teacher Education Programme (PPU) and administers the university’s Graduate Teacher Education Programme (Lektorprogrammet) with about 300 new students each year. About 200 students follow the Master Programme in Educational Leadership. ILS also manages the study programme Teach First Norway in cooperation with the City of Oslo Education Agency and Equinor.

The Department of Teacher Education and School Research has approximately 40 administrative and 100 academic staff.

Applicants are invited to apply for a position as research fellow at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research. The position is part of the Linking Instruction and Student Experiences (LISE) project and involves interdisciplinary research in language education, specifically the teaching of English and French.

Linking Instruction and Student Experiences (LISE) is a large-scale research project that aims to gain new knowledge about naturally occurring instruction over time, within and across school subjects including English and French. Since 2015, the LISE research team, including several research assistants, have collected large-scale data (videos and surveys) and case study data (video-stimulated interviews, screen recordings and student texts) among teachers and students in Norwegian lower secondary schools. The study followed seven classes over two school years (grades 9–10) in six school subjects, including English and French. The research fellow is to work closely with the LISE team in the analysis and dissemination of existing data, and in the collection of new data, with specific focus on interdisciplinary research across the school subjects English and French. Experience with school research, classroom observation, interviews, questionnaires, video- and/or audio-based research approaches will also be an advantage. Good oral and written communication skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language are necessary. Communication skills in English and French are also required.

More about the position

The fellowship period is up to 4 years, with 3 years devoted to research education. The position entails a compulsory work load of 25% that consists of teaching and supervision duties and research assistance.

Positions as research fellows are fixed-term educational posts where the aim is that the research fellow completes a doctoral degree (PhD) during the period of employment.

The research fellow must take part in the Faculty’s approved PhD programme and is expected to complete the projectwithin the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The Department of Teacher Education and School Research organizes four research groups. It is expected that the applicant is affiliated with the research group Studies of instruction across Subjects and Competences (SISCO).

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must satisfy the requirements for admission to the Faculty’s PhD program
  • Teacher education with a Master’s degree in English/English didactics or French/French didactics
  • The master’s degree (120 ECTS) must have a minimum grade B (ECTS grading scale) or equivalent. It must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS with a minimum grade B
  • Familiarity with the Norwegian/Scandinavian school system will be considered an advantage
  • Good oral and written communication skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, English andr French

In the assessment of applications, emphasis will be placed on:

  • The quality of the project description; the description of the research topic, the specific problems to be studied, the choice of scientific theory and method, and the proposed implementation plan for the study.
  • The applicant’s personal suitability and motivation for the post, including her/his ability to collaborate and to form part of a crossdisciplinary academic community.
  • The applicant’s academic attitude and motivation with regard to completing the research training program

Applicants from outside the Nordic countries where English is not the official language must attach a TOEFL test with a minimum score of 550 unless they have a diploma from a university in an English-speaking country.
