The Department of Special Needs Education is one of the three departments at UiO's Faculty of Educational Sciences.

The department focuses on basic and applied research and education of bachelor-, master- and doctoral level candidates within the field of special needs education in Norway.


The department has today approximately 25 permanent employees that work with research, 14 temporary research fellows and postdoctoral fellows, in addition to 12 administrative employees. The department has approximately 800 students distributed between bachelor- and master’s degree studies in Special Needs Education, master’s degree studies in Special Needs Education, as well as PhD-studies.

About the position

Applications are invited for a full-time (100 %), three-year position as PhD Research Fellow at the Department of Special Needs Education (ISP), Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Oslo. The contract can be extended by up to one year, conditional on the assignment of teaching, and other compulsory duties.

The PhD-fellowship is within the subject area of “Psychological and social difficulties” and the position is linked to the project: Speaking up for the quiet ones: Voicing the perspectives of shy students in middle schools.

The project “Speaking up for the quiet ones” is a study in three phases exploring shy student’s experiences and their teachers’ use of strategies. The announced position will mainly concentrate on phase one in the project where qualitative observations and interviews in schools will be conducted. The research fellow will be expected to conduct a study as a part of the main project, focusing on teachers’ strategies in the classroom and teachers experiences of how shy students in middle school handle the psychosocial environment. The parents’ perspective of their shy students’ experiences in school is also a relevant focus. International researchers are involved in the project and the successful applicant will have the possibility to take part in networks meetings and research collaboration abroad. It is expected that the research fellow take part in collaboration in the project as a whole.

As a part of the project, the research fellow will participate in the research group Behavioral Emotional and Educational Difficulties.

More about the position

The fellowship period can, after agreement, be extended to a four-year position, with 3 years devoted to research education. A four-year position entails a compulsory workload of 25% that consists of teaching and supervision duties and research assistance.

The research fellow must take part in the Faculty’s approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent qualifications in special needs education, pedagogy, psychology or any other field with sufficient relevance to the announced position.
  • Minimum grade B (ECTS grading scale) or equivalent on the Master’s degree, and explicit indication of the grade achieved on the thesis part. The Master’s degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English and in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language

In the assessment of applications, emphasis will be put on:

  • The applicant’s academic aptitude for completing the research training program.
  • The project description, which must be submitted with the application.
  • The applicant’s personal suitability and motivation for the post, including his/her ability to collaborate and to form part of a cross-disciplinary academic community.
