Deadline: 28.02.2021

Universitetet i Oslo

The University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest and highest rated institution of research and education with 28 000 students and 7000 employees. Its broad range of academic disciplines and internationally esteemed research communities make UiO an important contributor to society.

Department of Mathematics is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The Department is engaged in research covering a wide spectrum of subjects within mathematics, mechanics and statistics.

Job description

Position as PhD Research Fellow in Stochastics, Differential Equations, Computational Mathematics, and Risk is available at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Oslo, Norway.

If the successful candidate has a good knowledge of one Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Swedish, Danish), the fellowship will be for a period of 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work (teaching responsibilities at the Department). Otherwise, the fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with no compulsory work.

Starting date no later than October 1, 2021.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo

More about the position

The PhD position is linked to the research groups of Section 3: Risk and Stochastics and Section 4: Partial Differential Equations and Computational Mathematics. The groups perform research in Partial (Stochastic) Differential Equations, Stochastic Analysis, Computational Mathematics, Uncertainty and Risk Analysis.

The research groups in Section 3 and 4 have a strong interdisciplinary competence which include stochastic analysis, partial differential equations, numerical analysis, combinatorial matrix theory, approximation theory, probability theory and mathematical statistics. The two sections are rich in experienced, active, and internationally renowned scientists, who run various projects in their own fields as well as collaborate across the sections.

The position includes research within one or more of the above mentioned fields, depending on experience and interest. In general, these research groups are interested in mathematical models of complicated phenomena which arise in applications in both the natural and social sciences, this includes research within risk and control methods from engineering as well as from insurance and finance. To study such models, techniques from both deterministic and stochastic analysis, as well as numerical analysis, are used. Preference will be given to candidates which can document knowledge in these fields.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree at the University of Oslo. The PhD studies at UiO are characterized by a very strong research component. The PhD thesis usually consists of several scientific papers, written during the PhD period and published in leading scientific journals. The candidates are also required to take a small number of advanced courses as part of their PhD education.

The PhD fellow will work in a well-established and internationally oriented research group with high ambitions in research excellency. It is expected that the PhD fellow will take an active part both in research and the section’s activities.

Qualification requirements
