The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences overall objective is to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health. The Institute is responsible for teaching in basic medical sciences for the programmes of professional study in medicine and the Master's programme in clinical nutrition. Job description

We seek an enthusiastic and ambitious co-worker for a 3-year position in a Research Fellowship as PhD Candidate in immunology in the Natural Killer cell group, Division of Anatomy, Department of Molecular Medicine, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Oslo.

The focus of our research is the role of NK cells in immune recognition and control of cancer and intracellular infections, in particular the mechanisms involved in discriminating between sick and healthy cells. The research environment at the Department of Molecular Medicine is dynamic and stimulating, with strong traditions in immunology and cell biology. The main supervisor will be Professor/MD Erik Dissen.

More about the position

The fellowship period is three years and devoted to carrying out a project entitled “Killing in the service of life: Novel ligands for NK cells in cancer and infection”. The project builds on recent discoveries of ligands for activating NK cell receptors.

The fellowship period may be extended to 4 years for a motivated and qualified candidate. A 4-year position entails a compulsory work load of 25% that consists of teaching and supervision duties and research assistance.

The research fellow must take part in the Faculty’s approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The applicant must, in collaboration with her/his supervisor, within three months after employment, have worked out a complete project description to be attached to the application for admission to the doctoral program. For more information, please see our web site.

Work tasks include

  • Molecular immunology experiments, including protein purification, proteomics, advanced flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, molecular biology, cell culture and cell isolation.
  • Writing and revising scientific articles

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must hold a medical degree or master’s degree (120 ECTS) or an equivalent qualification in life sciences (biology, physiology, veterinary medicine or similar), or must have submitted their master’s thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. The master’s degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.

Necessary training will be provided by the group. However, the following qualifications will be considered positively:

  • Experience with basic molecular biology techniques, e.g. PCR, cloning, gene targeting, western blots and sequence analysis.
  • Experience with cell culture, transfections and cell isolation
  • Experience with immunological methods, including flow cytometry and functional immunoassays
  • Experience in work with experimental animals, including FELASA C approval

Personal skills

In assessing applications, particular emphasis will be placed upon the academic and personal ability of the candidate to complete the project within the given time frame and write a PhD thesis under supervision.
