The Department of Psychology is one of seven units of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and has 75 permanent and 70 temporary members of scientific staff. Degrees are offered at bachelor and master level, plus a clinical training programme, and the PhD programme has 140 students.

Job description

An open Ph.D.-fellow position is available at the Section for Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience (CCN) at the Department of Psychology, University of Oslo. The section covers basic and applied research and teaching for the Bachelor, Master, Professional and PhD programs in cognitive and biological as well as neuro-psychology.

The research project associated with this position is open within the field covered by CCN. The Ph.D.-fellow is expected to develop a project outline, which upon acceptance will be supervised by a faculty member of CCN.

The Ph.D. fellow will join the Ph.D. program approved by the Department of Psychology and is expected to complete the research project during the period of employment. The appointment is fulltime for a period of three or four years depending on the competence of the successful applicant and the teaching and administrative needs of the section. In case of a four-year appointment, teaching and administrative activities make up 25% of yearly duty work (for example, teaching in lectures or seminars, supervision of students, grading of exams, committee work).

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in psychology, cognitive or computational neuroscience, biology, or a related field.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are necessary.
  • Previous training in methods related to the section’s research and teaching activities is required (e.g, brain imaging or biosignal analysis, cognitive modeling, advanced statistical methods).
  • The candidate’s research proposal needs to reflect research and organizational expertise.
  • The candidate must be qualified for admission to the PhD program at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Oslo.
  • Experience with programming is considered a plus (e.g., in Matlab, R, Python, C++/C, Java).
  • Prior work experience with relevance for research or teaching activities of the section are also considered a plus.
  • Candidates who are creative, motivated, and organized will be preferred.

Personal skills

Excellent communication and collaborative skills (team player) is required.

  • a cover letter detailing the applicant’s motivation and qualifications with relevance for the position.
  • a project proposal of max 5 pages (further information below), plus an additional statement of support of the prospective main supervisor (who must be a faculty member tied to CCN).
  • a CV with a list of scientific contributions (in research, teaching, or dissemination).
  • copies of educational certificates in English or in one of the Scandinavian languages (academic transcripts only).
  • a list of two to three references (incl. name, relation to candidate, e-mail and phone number). No letter of reference should be included in the application.

The project proposal should contain the following sections: background, research questions/hypotheses, approach/methodology, implementation/feasibility, timeline, ethical considerations, references. Further sections may be added if so necessary. The page format must be A4 with 2 cm margins, single spacing and Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman or similar 11-point font. It is permitted to use 9-point font for the list of references and figure captions.

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the documented, academic qualifications, the project description, as well as the candidate’s motivation and personal suitability. Interviews with the best qualified candidates will be arranged.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.
