Institutt for produktdesign tilbyr bachelor- og masterstudium i produktdesign, og har forsknings- og utviklingsaktiviteter.

The Faculty of Technology, Arts and Design (TKD) at OsloMet announces one open PhD fellowship in the area of art and design based innovation for sustainability. The position will be attached to the Department of Art, Design and Drama and/or the Department of Product Design. The fellowship will be for a period of four years including 25% compulsory work (teaching and supervision at BSc and MSc level), alternatively three years without compulsory work. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at OsloMet to obtain the degree PhD

The aims of the planned PhD programme

The overall aim of the planned PhD program is to contribute to a sustainable society and welfare for all. The program will have a holistic, innovative and practice-oriented approach. Its unique approach is its combination of humanistic research, in particular art and design research, with computer science and social sciences in an interdisciplinary setting. The program is characterized by interdisciplinarity and by theoretical and methodological plurality. Innovation and entrepreneurship are key elements. Culture (human thinking, behavior, habits and attitudes) is regarded as a foundational component of sustainability, while social, economic and environmental factors are supporting and interrelated components. The program will prepare the candidates for the needs of an employment market that includes the public sector, the business community and academia.

Area of research

Innovation for Sustainability is a strategic research area at the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design. Sustainability is a central focus area at OsloMet. The PhD Fellowship will be a free-standing project. Applicants should position their research within the above described scope of the planned PhD program in Innovation for Sustainability and are required to provide a description of their chosen research project when applying for the PhD position. The PhD Fellowship will follow a current PhD education at OsloMet until the PhD education in Innovation for Sustainability has been established. The successful candidate for the position will focus on discussing and developing products, processes, systems and/or art and design education, contributing to a sustainable society and welfare for all. Innovative and interdisciplinary methods, and a human-centered and cultural approach are emphasized. Ethic and/or aesthetic inquiries in this concern are encouraged.

A potential main supervisor at the Faculty og Technology, Art & Design must be listed in the final application. Where possible, a co-supervisor from OsloMet or elsewhere should also be listed.

We ask that you as a candidate try to find a relevant supervisor at OsloMet. In the case that you do not have knowledge of relevant supervisors, you can send a 200-word ( maximum) description of your proposed research project to mari.devik@oslomet.no with the title Abstract PhD Fellowship in Innovative design for sustainability. The abstract will be sent to relevant supervisors so that they can contact you. This is done to support matching of applicants and potential supervisors. To the degree that no relevant supervisors exist or are available, this will be communicated to you.

You must have

  • Master’s degree in art and/or design or equivalent in an area relevant for the PhD
  • project (120 ECTS) with a grade B or better
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • The fellowship requires successful enrolment to a PhD program at OsloMet in attendance of the establishment of the Innovation for Sustainability program, to be hosted by TKD and Centre for Welfare and Labour Research (SVA)

When assessing and ranking the qualified applicants, emphasis will be placed on

  • The scientific quality of the project description, including originality, interdisciplinarity and potential
  • The relevance of the project description to the listed research areas
  • The project's feasibility within the dedicated time period
  • Past scientific work, where relevant
  • Experience from previous research activities and participation in research projects.
  • Experience from teaching and/or supervision at the college or university level

Desired skills and experience

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate and contribute in interdisciplinary teams
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, plan, dimension and direct own work
  • Ability and willingness to explore possibilities for innovation and creativity as they arise
  • Experience with publishing research results, preferably in international peer-reviewed conferences and/or journals
  • Experience in working with issues regarding sustainability
  • Capacity to work under pressure

The salary for the position is in accordance with the pay scale for Norwegian state employees, PhD Fellowship, code 1017. State salary wage scale 54 : 482.200 NOK per year

Expert evaluation

An expert committee will assess applicants. You must upload the following documents together with your application by the final date for applications:

  • CV, references and all pages of certificates/diplomas. The certificates/diplomas must include ECTS grades (A–F). Foreign diplomas must be translated into English by the degree-conferring institution. Education taken abroad should preferably be recognised in advance by NOKUT, and a confirmed copy of the letter of recognition should be enclosed.
  • Your master's degree/second degree thesis (and any other scholarly work that you wish the expert committee to take into consideration) and a list of your publications, if relevant
  • Approvals from ethical committees or other necessary permits/approvals
  • If relevant, project description: maximum 10 pages. The project description must be written in English or a Scandinavian language.

You must upload all of these documents. Original documents and valid passport must be presented if you are invited for an interview. OsloMet performs document inspections in order to give you as a candidate a proper evaluation and ensure fair competition.
