About the position

The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) is looking for a senior researcher (100%) with a professional interest in International Relations/political science and a documented background in data analytics, including network analysis and associated publications. This is a permanent position available from January 2023.

The researcher will produce high-quality research, contribute to NUPI’s methodological development and to project acquisition. The position will initially be financed by on-going projects at NUPI and you will be expected to contribute to theoretical application and specific data-related tasks in these projects, including dataset development and data analysis. The relevant projects concern research topics on issues such as international diplomacy, regional and global governance, including environmental politics. Theoretical expertise related to these research topics and area knowledge and experience related to research on the Global South would be an advantage.

It is expected that you will take leading roles when it comes to project acquisition from sources such as the Research Council, the EU, as well as Norwegian ministries and other potential funding sources. We offer support from our research administration and the organisation's routines for collegial feedback, in the development of new research projects and applications.

Your role

  • Develop and implement ongoing research projects and ensure that high quality deliverables are delivered on time.
  • Conduct ground-breaking research and publish articles in academic journals.
  • Further develop ongoing research, as well as new projects by preparing project applications independently and in project groups.
  • Contribute to good research dissemination and communication to different audiences, including the public.
  • Collaborate with colleagues at NUPI, as well as with national and international partners.
  • Contribute to general methodological development and a culture of learning and sharing at NUPI.

Your profile

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline, such as International Relations or Political Science.
  • Quantitative skills and experience with managing datasets and data analysis is a requirement, including competence in relevant programmes such as R or Python.
  • Qualitative research skills are an additional advantage and desirable for the position.
  • Strong theoretical knowledge of International Relations and political science.
  • Recent publications in high-impact journals.
  • Experience with project acquisition, working with a range of financing sources, including more policy-oriented sources.
  • General theoretical and methodological curiosity and interest in further developing not only personal skills, but also contributing to the institute’s theoretical and methodological development.
  • Very good oral presentation and writing skills in English. Norwegian and other relevant language skills will be an advantage.
  • Professional and service-oriented with the ability to promote collaboration in an international environment.
  • High work capacity and ability to handle several tasks simultaneously.
  • This post is suitable for someone early in their career with 2-3 years’ experience after their PhD. Relevant experience will be an advantage.
