Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology

The position

A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available at the Department of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology.

The position is a fixed term position for a duration of two and a half-year (2.5 years). Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant can carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The workplace is at UiT in Narvik. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

The project

The Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology consists of five departments where Department of Industrial Engineering is where the position is located. The nearest professional affiliation will be at the Department’s research group “Intelligent Manufacturing and Logistics” and its interrelated Technological Competence Center for Arctic Logistics Operations (ArcLog).

The position will be attached to the project “UiT Aurora Center for Mathematical Structures in Computations” (MASCOT) funded by the UiT Aurora Centers initiative. The MASCOT project aims to unify and advance research frontiers in the interplay of computational and pure mathematics by exploring fundamental mathematical structures and their increasing significance for modern algorithms and novel program architectures.

The research topic for this PostDoc is to develop real-time optimization-simulation system(s) for supporting decision making for sustainable reverse logistics management. Current decision support systems are mainly based on the historical data and use a single analytical method, which fail to take the dynamics and environmental uncertainties into account. This project will especially focus on optimizing multi-sourced waste collection, which is a complex decision-making problem that is affected by many non-related or corelated factors, e.g., weather, traffic, filling rate, pickup capacity, etc. In this regard, a real-time optimization-simulation system – powered by digital twin – can provide novel solutions for dynamic decision support.
