About the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at NMBU is the country's only veterinary professional education and provide expertise in veterinary medicine and veterinary public health. The Faculty educates veterinarians, animal nurses and doctoral students in Veterinary Science and researches in veterinary medicine and related biomedical fields. We have 500 students and 430 employees.

The faculty consists of the departments of Preclinical Sciences and Pathology, Paraclinical Sciences, Production Animal Clinical Sciences and Companion Animal Clinical Sciences. We also run the Animal Hospital, which is closely linked to our research and education, and receives patients from all over the country.

The Department of Paraclinical Sciences consists of eight groups: Pharmacology, Toxicology, Food Safety, Aquamedicine, Bacteriology and Mycology, Parasitology, Virology, Nutrition and Health.

The department's main tasks are to provide research-based teaching of veterinary and animal nurse students, as well as to conduct research at a high international level in the areas of food safety and fish and animal health. In addition, considerable work is being done in connection with the many service and reference functions the department has for public and private actors.

About the position

The Nutrition and Health Unit at the Department of Paraclinical Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 2-year postdoctoral position related to the area nutrition and health in salmonids.

The unit is involved in several research projects addressing the health effects of new feed ingredients for salmonids and other domestic animals. Our research is funded by both public and private research grants. The unit has a wide professional network, and most research projects involve collaboration with the industry.

Nutrition and gut health are the main research areas of all the unit’s projects, involving feeding experiments with various animal species, such as Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, zebrafish, mink and chicken. We also work within the area nutrition of horses and pets. Our analytical methods range from the classical, to the most up to date developed within biochemistry, physiology and molecular biology, including characterization of microbiota, clinical and histopathological methods.

In vitro model systems are used to address mechanistic effects of feed components and additives on fish gut health. The unit has several highly skilled co-workers who collaborate according to expertise and project milestones.

We are now seeking an outstanding candidate with a background in fish nutrition, digestive physiology, gut health, and gut microbiota, to join our team. The position will be linked to the EU FET open-funded research project Fish-AI (http://fish-ai.eu/). The main goal of the project is to develop a new generation in vitro 3D culture platform of the intestinal mucosa for predictive assessment of nutritional value of alternative fish feed ingredients.
