The Department of archaeology, conservation and history (IAKH) is comprised of three disciplines which in different ways study the past. The department has internationally oriented archaeologists, the only conservation program in Norway and the biggest group of historians in Scandinavia. The department has close to 100 employees, including non-permanent research fellows. The study programs span archaeology from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages, object and paintings conservation, and history from Antiquity to the present age.

Job description

A position of Senior lecturer (SKO 1198) in Neolithic and Bronze Age Archaeology is available at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History, University of Oslo

The position is for 1 year, starting from 1 August 2021. The holder of the position is expected to be actively involved in teaching within Neolithic and Bronze Age archaeology at all levels. The position holder is expected to supervise MA candidates, to have an active role in the Department’s field courses for archaeology students, and to carry out administrative duties in accordance with the needs of the Department.

More about the position

The vacancy is a teaching position, with 75 % teaching and dissemination work, 19 % academic development work, and 6 % administration. Within the normal duties and academic competence, the person appointed may also be directed to work outside his/her department.

The appointment is made on condition that changes to the subject area and tasks may be determined by the employer.

Qualification requirements

  • PhD degree or equivalent academic qualifications with a specialization in the archaeology of the Neolithic and/or Bronze Age in Scandinavia
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English and a Scandinavian language
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position

In the evaluation of the applicants, emphasis will be placed on:

  • Pedagogical qualifications and practice, mainly from universities or higher education institutions, see How to document your pedagogical skills
  • Experience in producing text books, compilations and lecture notes or experience in internet based teaching/flexible learning
  • Good teamwork skills and experience
  • Professional competence and publication in the field
  • Experience in planning and leading field courses for archaeology students, especially at the MA level
  • Theoretical, methodological and interpretative sophistication
  • Experience with and ability to build external networks

The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of both English and one of the Scandinavian languages as working languages.
