LEDIG STILLING VED SIMULA

Internship at Simula - 2022: Database Management and Visualization for Network Measurements

Deadline: 02.09.2022

Simula Research Laboratory AS

Simula is a publicly-owned ICT research lab. Our main objective is to reach new levels of understanding and to create vital knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value to society.

We are now recruiting part-time interns for approximately 25 projects in the fields of ICT research, to work together with motivated international researchers.

Project: Database Management and Visualization for Network Measurements

Broadband networks are a key component of modern communication infrastructures, and their performance has significant consequences for a large number of stakeholders including end-users, network operators, and regulators.

One of the methods for evaluating the performance of broadband networks is to conduct crowdsourced speed measurements (e.g., mobile “speedtest” apps which can be run by any smartphone user anywhere and at any time).

Various European national regulatory authorities (NRAs) provide such crowdsourced speedtest tools in app stores, and make the corresponding measurement results publicly available as open datasets*.

We would like to analyze these datasets jointly and in an automatized fashion, by setting up a SQL database which is continuously updated with new results from multiple sources. The project tasks include setting up an accurate and efficient DB schema, populating the DB with existing data, establishing a mechanism for the automatic daily import of new data (using the RESTful APIs from each NRA), and implementing a user-friendly dashboard visualization for running queries on multiple datasets at once.
