About the position

A permanent position as a lab engineer is available at the Oslo Assessment Intervention & Learning Lab, Department of Special Needs Education, Faculty of Educational Sciences.

One of the main goals of the Strategy of the Faculty of Educational Sciences it to further develop digital infrastructure for enhancing high quality research and teaching. The person we seek will be an important contributor in this joint effort. This person will be essential for carrying out the work of the Oslo Assessment Intervention & Learning Lab and their duties will include all technical aspects of setting up, supporting, maintaining and troubleshooting software, procedures, and equipment for the users of the lab.

Work tasks

• Set up, pilot, troubleshoot, validate, revise and maintain software scripts for experimental data collection, processing, and analysis, both by using proprietary device-specific software and by coding custom scripts in common programming languages.
• Develop and maintain custom software applications for computerized assessment with secure data collection, organization, storage, and archiving.
• Install, test, and troubleshoot lab equipment including standard PC hardware and networking as well as audio equipment and dedicated devices such as eye tracking and EEG setups.
• Adopt scripts and apps to conform to wide ranging experimental, clinical, and legislative requirements (e.g., calibration, resolution, noise reduction, data protection etc.)
• Provide technical support for the data collection and processing workflows associated with qualitative research (such as audio/video recordings in observational studies, application of simple text mining and NLP techniques in corpus and discourse analyses etc.)

Qualification requirements

• BS degree (or equivalent) in Engineering, Computer Science, Informatics, or related field. Documented work experience relevant to the work tasks in the position may replace the educational requirements as long as the candidate can document the ability to master tasks at the relevant level
• Strong programming and debugging skills and flexibility working across programming languages and environments that are most relevant for the aforementioned tasks (for example, Python, Matlab, Javascript, R, Java)

Personal skills

• Willingness to learn and to familiarize oneself with the lab equipment and procedures and to strive for high data quality, including experimental data collection, computerized assessment, audio and video recording, audiometry evaluation, eye tracking, and EEG recording.
• Dedicated troubleshooting attitude.
• Adequate social skills to guide and support inexperienced lab users, including individual tutoring and occasional group presentations.

• Salary NOK 488 500 – 565 500 per annum depending on qualifications in a position as Head Engineer, position code 1087
• Salary NOK 435 500 – 497 000 per annum depending on qualifications in a position as Principal Engineer, position code 1085
