The Department of Informatics has a vacancy for a PhD position in Software Language Engineering (SLE) for a fixed term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year. The position is connected to the project “Co-Evolution of Software Languages and Language Processors (Co-Evo)”, funded by the Research Council of Norway. A PhD degree in computer science, SLE, is highly requested by corporate organizations and academia.

About the Department

The Department of Informatics has seven units that deliver education and research at a high international level in algorithms, bioinformatics, optimization, visualization, security, programming theory, and machine learning. The Department has been ranked first in Norway with respect to the quality of its research in all evaluation issued by the Research Council of Norway, and some of our groups are considered world leading within their field.

About the project/work tasks

The project aims at developing theory, tools and techniques for semi-automated co-evolution of software languages and language processors (such as refactoring tools, IDEs, compilers, etc). More information about the project can be found here.

Qualifications and personal qualities

  • Applicants must hold a master's degree or the equivalent in computer science / software engineering or a similar field of study, or must have submitted his/her master's thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded.
  • Applicants should ideally have a background in or experience from software language engineering, programming language theory or software engineering.
  • Programming skills are required.
  • Proven experience or skill in one or more of the following areas is an advantage: Formal languages, category theory, term rewriting, code analysis, automated refactoring, program transformation, grammars, syntax and language semantics, empirical studies and code/repository mining.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and demonstrate good communicative and collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English
  • Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized.
  • Ambitions and potential will count when evaluating the candidates.

About the PhD position

The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with the possibility for a 4th year, consisting of 25 % work related to teaching, recruitment or dissemination, distributed across the employment period. The 4th year is contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department, and will be decided upon appointment. The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).

About the research training

As a PhD candidate, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. A final plan for the implementation of the research training must be approved by the faculty within three months after you have commenced in the position. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.
