Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

The University of Bergen, Norway, welcomes applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in Political Science/Political Communication. The position is for a period of 4 years, 75% of which is dedicated to research and 25% of which is dedicated to project administrative tasks and/or teaching and supervision. The successful candidate will be affiliated with the Digital Social Science Core Facility (DIGSSCORE) and with the Department of Comparative Politics.

The position is funded by the research project Terms of Agreement: The Challenge of Muslim Inclusion, which was awarded by the Research Council of Norway. The project is led by Professors of Political Science Elisabeth Ivarsflaten, University of Bergen; Stefan Dahlberg, University of Bergen and University of Gothenburg; and Paul Sniderman, Stanford University and University of Bergen.

About the project/work tasks:

To complement and add to the other research in the project, we now seek a candidate who wishes to pursue their own postdoctoral research project on media content, including in online media, about Muslims. The successful applicant will have experience in and a wish to continue doing research using spontaneously generated online text data. The post-doctoral fellow will have access both to a massive comparative online text archive built by Professor Stefan Dahlberg and to the survey and lab infrastructures run by the Digital Social Science Core Facility at the University of Bergen.

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The fixed-term period for this position is 4 years. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution. The candidate is expected to relocate to Bergen.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

The applicant must

  • hold (or be close to submission and defence of) a PhD within political science, political communication, media studies or similar fields. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded
  • have experience in and a wish to continue doing research using spontaneously generated online text data
  • have advanced skills in methods used to analyse online text data. Experience in quantitative content analysis, such as distributional semantics and topic modelling is meritorious, but not a requirement
  • be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others
  • be proficient in both written and oral English
  • knowledge of Scandinavian languages is beneficial for this position, but not a requirement

  • Salary at pay grade 59 – 62 (code 1352) on the government salary scale upon appointment (equivalent to NOK 523 200.- to 552 800.- pr. year). Further promotions are made according to length of service in the position.

  • A research proposal (maximum 4 pages) outlining how the candidate will make scientific advances within the broad theme of media content, including in online media, about Muslims.
  • The full text of a maximum of five publications to be considered in the assessment (co-authored publications must be accompanied by declarations of co-authorship).
  • A reference list including all works of a scientific nature.
  • The names and contact information for two reference persons. One of these must be the main supervisor of the PhD thesis.
  • Transcripts and diplomas and official confirmation that the doctoral thesis has been submitted.
