Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

At the Department of Earth Science, there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within geochemistry/geomicrobiology with a focus on microbial mediated alteration of oceanic crust. The position is for a fixed term of 3 years and is associated with K. G. Jebsen Centre for Deep Sea Research. It is funded by NFR through the project EnterDeep.

About the project/work tasks:

The primary objective of the EnterDeep project is to quantify the environmental impact of microbial activity in newly formed oceanic basalt and to evaluate potential environmental consequences. We will combine genomics with quantitative geochemistry in addition to rate modelling in order to achieve this objective. The specific tasks for this position will be to establish and develop ex situ and in situ experiments and analyze samples from both of these. The applicant will likely spend some time in Bremen, Germany as part of the project.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within geochemistry or microbiology, or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.

In addition, the following are skills required for the position:

  • Experience with micro-CT scanning.
  • Experience with thermodynamic reaction rate and reaction path modelling.
  • Prior knowledge of microbe/water/rock interactions.
  • Experience with small scale analytical techniques like (LA-)ICP-MS, SEM, and AFM.
  • Experience with experimental work under hydrothermal conditions.
  • Hands on experience with deep drilling observatories/monitoring.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
