Postdoctoral Fellow position

There is a vacancy for a 4-year postdoc position at the Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology (https://www.uib.no/en/sarssenteret) in the research group of Dr. Timothy Lynagh, funded by an ERC starting grant. The Sars Centre belongs to the University of Bergen, and is partner of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) www.embl.de/. The place of work will be at the Sars Centre. The preferred starting time is May/June 2019.

About the project/work tasks:

Work in the Lynagh group focuses on the evolution, function, and pharmacology of ligand-gated ion channels, receptors that mediate rapid communication between neurons, using molecular phylogenetics, mutagenesis, chemical biology, and electrophysiology. This postdoc project aims to dissect the chemical basis by which excitatory receptors from the nervous sytem recognize neurotransmitters. To this end, the candidate will perform both molecular/chemical biology and electrophysiological experiments. There is also potential for structural biology work, e.g. X-ray crystsallography.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

• The applicant must hold a PhD (at least equivalent to a Norwegian PhD) in either protein biophysics, neurobiology or related discipline or have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded
• Experience with patch clamp electrophysiology is essential
• Experience with chemical biology (e.g. non-cannonical amino acid incorporation) or structural biology (e.g. X-ray crystallography) will be viewed favourably
• It is expected that the candidate is able to work independently and in a structured manner, and demonstrates good collaborative skills
• Personal communication skills to interact with the scientific environment are required
• Proficiency in both written and oral English
