Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position at the Department of Psychosocial Science, Faculty of Psychology.

The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years from 1 September 2019 until 31 August 2022, and is affiliated with the external funded project "Targeting Mental Models of Climate Change Risk to facilitate Climate Action".

About the project/work tasks:

  • The overarching objective of the project is to identify effective adaptation and mitigation strategies by targeting the gap between local perceptions of climate risk and scientific projections of climate change impacts in East Africa (Lake Victoria) and West Africa (Lagos). Work tasks:

  • Develop study designs to elicit mental models about climate change among stakeholders and the public.
  • Conduct stakeholder workshops and public opinion surveys on climate risk perception and mental models of climate change.
  • Cooperate with an international and interdisciplinary team to compare climate change perceptions with projections from hydrological models and scenario simulations.
  • Conduct data collection and liaise with partners and stakeholders in Africa.
  • Perform statistical analyses.
  • Contribute to the preparation of periodic project reports and co-author scientific articles.
  • Disseminate project results at conferences and through popular science channels.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must have completed their PhD within a social science (psychology, economics, geography, sociology or cognate discipline) at the time of application.
  • Experience with research addressing climate change perceptions, behavioural responses to climate change and the individual and social factors that influence climate change engagement. Working knowledge of the risk, decision-making or environmental/climate psychology literature is an advantage.
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Experience with publishing in international (English) peer-reviewed scientific journals demonstrated by high quality research publications.
  • Competence with survey methodology and quantitative data analysis is required in this role.
  • The applicant must be able to work independently, as part of a team and in a structured manner.
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The fixed-term period for this position is 3 years from 1 September 2019 until 31 August 2022. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a work schedule. For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work will take place in consultation with the project/centre manager. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

  • Salary at pay grade 59 (code 1352 / pay range 24, alternative 3) according to the state salary scale upon appointment. This currently amounts to an annual salary of NOK 514 800 before taxes.
