Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

The University of Bergen is a renowned educational and research institution, organised into seven faculties and approximately 54 institutes and academic centres. Campus is located in the centre of Bergen with university areas at Nygårdshøyden, Haukeland, Marineholmen, Møllendalsveien and Årstad.

At the Norwegian Centre of Excellence, Centre for Cancer Biomarkers CCBIO at Faculty of Medicine, University of Bergen, a (100%) temporary position is available for a period of three (3) years.

About the project/work tasks:

CCBIO is directed by Professor Lars A. Akslen and is working on biomarkers in order to attain a better understanding of malignant tumors and more precise cancer treatment. The researchers have a special focus on mechanisms and biomarkers related to tumor growth and tumor-microenvironment interactions and the impact this has upon metastasis and poor prognosis. The research activity is organized in four programs: basic studies and animal models (Program 1), discovery and validation of new biomarkers (Program 2), clinical studies (Program 3), and studies on ethics, economics and priorities (Program 4). CCBIO has a strong international profile and collaborators worldwide. More about CCBIOThe Postdoctoral Fellow will be part of Program 2 in the project ” ”High-Dimensional Quantification of the Tumor-Immune-Stromal Interface: Clinical Translation for Personalized Medicine”. The aim is to identify new biomarkers that reflect the microenvironmental complexity of human cancers, the interaction between cancer cells and the microenvironment, and how this influences aggressive tumor features and patient prognosis. The position will focus on imaging mass cytometry and high dimensional analysis of human tissue samples and relevant cell line panels.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within cancer research, or have the doctoral thesis submitted and approved prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • Applicants must have experience with high dimensional analysis of mass cytometry or single cell RNA sequence data.
  • Experience with modern molecular cell biology methods is required.
  • Applicants must be fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Emphasis will be put upon personal abilities. Applicants with documented ability to work independently, cooperate well, exhibit a high level of motivation and responsibility and have high working capacity and enthusiasm for scientific work will be preferred.
  • Applicants must not be allergic towards animals and must be willing to work with animals used for animal experiments

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

In general, the purpose of postdoctoral positions at the University of Bergen is the building of competence by means of further development of research work to a higher level than what is possible within an ordinary PhD program. The main goals of the positions are to qualify the successful candidate for professional top positions.

It is a goal that the employment period is carried out as a continuous research program. Hence, leaves of absence for other purposes than those laid down by law are normally not granted.

Applicants shall, once employed, put forward a proposal for a project for qualifying work. The proposal shall include a work plan. It is a condition that the successful candidate completes the project during the employment period.

The employee may be assigned up to 25% required duties in the form og teaching and similar work at the department

Postdoctoral fellowships are fixed term positions. You can not be employed as a postdoctoral fellow for more than one fixed term period at the same institution. Also, you cannot be employed in a postdoctoral position if you have previously held this type of position at a different institution in the region.

The fixed term period for the position is three years, with the possibility for an extension of the period up to one years if a research-related stay abroad shall be included in the employment period.

  • Salary level 59 (code 1352/pay framework 24.3) at present NOK 515 200 gross p.a., with a degree in Medicine level 61 (code 1352/pay framework 24.5) at present NOK 534 100 gross p.a., with a medical specialization level 63 (code 1352/pay framework 24.7) at present NOK 555 100 gross p.a. on the government salary scale. Further promotion will be after service seniority in the position. A pension contribute of 2 % will be deducted and deposited to the state pension scheme.
