About the position

Inland School of Business and Social Sciences, The PhD programme Innovation in Services - Public and Private (INSEPP), invites candidates to apply for a PhD research fellowship in Big Data Innovation.

The position lasts for four years with 25% teaching duties.The purpose of the Ph.D. Research Fellowship is for the admitted candidate to undergo a research training programme that leads to completion of a doctoral degree. The selected applicant will be expected to complete the PhD programme in 2024/2025.

The successful candidate is required to submit a proposal of a doctoral research training programme that is approved and agreed upon no later than 3 months after the date of commencement. The university will assist the selected candidate to formulate this agreement.

The PhD student will be a part of the growing innovation team at INSEPP during the Phd period. The reserch fellow will have a central place in the research environment within «Business Analytics» and will also become a member of the research group of the same name (led by Ørjan Mydland). The project

“Big data is one of the key economic assets of the future. Mastering the potential of big data technologies and understanding their potential to transform industrial sectors will enhance the competitiveness of European companies and result in economic growth and jobs. Europe needs a clear strategy to increase the competitiveness of European industries to drive innovation. Europe needs to foster the development and wide adoption of big data technologies, value adding use cases, and sustainable business models through a Big Data Ecosystem. Strategic investments are needed by both the public and private sector to enable Europe to be the leader in the global data-driven digital economy and to reap the benefits it offers with the creation of a European Big Data Ecosystem.” (Cavanillas et al. 2016, p. 10.)

Big data-driven innovation is relevant in most sectors and industries, but the objective of the PhD project is to empirically examine how big data-driven innovation can improve decision making in the energy, finance, and insurance sectors. The project will be an integral part of bigger research project on enterprise risk management (ERM), and the use of business analytics in these sectors in particular.

Examples of research questions that shall be answered in the project include (but are not limited to):

• What potentials for big data-driven innovation do exist within sectors that deals with big data daily, such as the energy- and finance sectors?

• How can the use of new and innovative big data-driven techniques be used to model and forecast risk in these sectors?

• How can information from multiple (big) data sources be combined to improve the overall enterprise risk management (ERM) of companies within these sectors?

• How can sophisticated techniques be presented/visualized to end-users to increase user value?

Qualifications and personal skills

We are seeking a candidate with excellent qualifications in quantitative methods, business economics and finance in general. It is also an advantage if the candidate has knowledge of innovation theory and (big) data driven innovation. Research experience is also an advantage (master thesis serves as a minimum level).

Additionally, candidates should have the following qualifications and personal skills:

  • Two-year Master's degree or equivalent, as defined in the Norwegian Qualification Framework in relevant disciplines, with the average grade B or better.
  • Other educational backgrounds can be considered on a case-by-case basis, if academically equivalent.
  • Applicants with a master’s degree from universities abroad, have to attach “Recognition of foreign higher education” from NOKUT. Instructions on how to get this master’s degree assessed and approved are given by NOKUT, cf.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, in English.
  • Overall good affinity with relevant ICT systems and relevant statistical software (such as R or STATA).
  • We are looking for a candidate who can work targeted and independently, but also in cooperation with others.
  • High work capacity and ability to initiate and implement in general.
  • Interested in collaborating with the academic community in the department.

  • The position’s salary follows position code 1017 PhD candidate in the state's wage regulations, a pay grade of 54 (NOK 482 200,- p.a). If 4 years with 25 % teaching duties is agreed upon, 25 % will be remunerated according to the appropriate level for a teaching position, on the basis of an evaluation of relevant qualifications.
