About the research field and content of the fellowship

Doctoral projects

Candidates must qualify for admission to the university’s PhD programme, and the doctoral education is carried out within this programme. Applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.

The academic and research community supporting the doctoral programme with supervision and research training comprises a number of professors and associate professors working in the relevant academic fields.

Project description

The age composition in the world population is changing, and soon the proportion of the elderly will be higher than ever before. Due to the change in population demographics, the gerodontology, the oral health in elderly and oral health care for the elderly is an increasingly more relevant topic. Increased knowledge in this area is essential. An overview of age distribution in the regional counties of Norway shows that the Inland region has the highest proportion of inhabitants in the age group 67 – 89 years. This puts the Inland region in a very interesting position, as a population study of oral health among this population will be unique.

The doctoral candidate will work on a project related to root caries in the elderly.

The doctoral candidate will collect data for a population study that will form the basis for further research work. The purpose of this project is to investigate the aetiology of root caries in the Norwegian population, and its incidence, severity and location. Furthermore, the goal of the project is to map the different types of treatment and whether these have varied effects in different oral environments.

Method and collaboration:

The first phase of the project will concern patient consent foraccess to dental health records belonging to the interest group; older than 65 years in the Inland region. Access to the county municipal dental health records will obtained in collaboration with TKØ and NIOM, as they have already been involved in similar projects. In addition, private dentists in the Inland region must contacted to request access to the records of the interest group after obtaining consent.

In the next phase, relevant data from the journal will transferred to and organised into the SPSS software. The study will primarily search for prevalence, distribution and treatment choices of root caries, and static findings related to these.

A sample of patients will be sent a questionnaire focusing on marital status, living conditions, physical activity, socio-economic conditions (education / income) and general health, to demonstrate any static correlations to root caries in the interest group.

The position is linked to the Department of Public Health and Sport Sciences.
