Stilling:
PhD position on ecosystem modelling
Application deadline: January 16, 2019
About the position
The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) has an immediate opening for a 3 years position as a PhD fellow within end-to-end modelling in the research group Ecosystem Processes. The work place will be at IMR in Bergen, Norway.
Area of research
The position is funded through the Nansen Legacy project, which aims to make an integrated assessment of climate and ecosystem changes in the Barents Sea. The area of research is under Research Foci 2, which concentrates on the human impacts on the system. Through this research, the candidate will explore how climate change will impact the fisheries in the Barents Sea, in particular how decrease in sea-ice potentially can change distributions and migration-routes of commercially important stocks and potential implications for the fisheries. The work will be performed using an end-to-end model for the Nordic and Barents Seas, the NoBa Atlantis model. The Atlantis modelling framework consists of multiple modules including ‘all’ trophic levels, and where anthropogenic impact is simulated through fisheries, pollution and/or other mortality sources. Extensive research collaboration with national and international research partners is expected and encouraged.
Applicant qualifications
Candidates must have completed an Msc or equivalent degree in marine biology, mathematics, oceanography, marine ecology, or related. The candidate must have documented programming skills and experience with ecosystem modelling, oral and written communication skills and high proficiency in English. Experience with the Atlantis framework is an advantage. Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team and to work independently and effectively towards objectives is required.
Previous experience with food web and/or ecosystem models is an advantage, as well as experience in programming in Fortran or C, and data analysis with Matlab, Python or R. Previous work in the fields of marine ecology and fisheries is also an advantage. A working knowledge of the Norwegian language is an advantage, but language training courses in Norwegian will be offered.
We offer:
- The opportunity to participate in development of state-of-the art ecosystem models in a positive, challenging and creative work environment.
- Workplace in a national institute with a high level of international contact.
- Flexible working hours, and a wide range of welfare services.
The Institute offers a governmentally regulated salary as 1017 research fellow and an excellent pension scheme through the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, and other welfare benefits (see www.spk.no/en for more information).
