Job description

The Institute of Health and Society (Helsam) offers a permanent, full position as Associate Professor in Medicine (Health Economics).

Tenure is linked to the Institute, but the current position will be allocated to the Department of Health Management and Health Economics (HELED). HELED is a multidisciplinary department, consisting mostly of economists, social scientists and medical doctors, and conducting research in the fields of health economics, health management and health policy, and public health. HELED is organized in four research groups (see website). The department is responsible for PhD training, the teaching of medical students in quality, leadership and knowledge management, and four discrete study programs: a bachelor’s degree program in Health Management and Health Economics (taught in Norwegian), two master’s degree programs; (both taught in English), and an executive master’s degree program in Health Administration (taught in Norwegian).

HELED is strengthening its research and teaching in health economics and economic evaluation. We offer a full position as associate professor with qualifications in health economics and economic evaluation.

Qualification requirements

• The required qualification for an associate professorship is a PhD degree or equivalent academic qualifications with knowledge in economic evaluation, economics and/or health economics
• Applicants who are not competent in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish must acquire such competence within two years subsequent to their appointment, and must be competent in English in the interim period
• Applicants who at the time of appointment cannot provide documentary evidence of basic teaching competence training, must acquire such competence in the course of a period of two years

In the ranking of competent applicants, the whole range of qualifications shall be considered, assessed and explicitly ascribed weight. Particular emphasis will be attached to applicants' scientific publications during the past five years and that are closely related to the area in which the post is advertised. • Cover letter (statement of motivation, summarizing scientific work and research interest)
• Curriculum Vitae (complete list of education, positions, pedagogical experience, administrative experience, project acquisition and coordination experience, and other qualifying activities)
• A complete list of academic work/publications
• Description of up to 10 scientific publications which the applicant considers particularly noteworthy
• The same 10 publications uploaded as PDF-files (preferably combined into one file but maximum 10 MB)
• A future research plan describing the applicant's scientific ambitions for the position and integration into ongoing research/teaching activities at the department. See the Department’s research groups here
• Description of basic pedagogical competence and lecturing experience. The applicant should also describe supervision of PhD-candidate(s), including the PhD-students name, point of time of the disputation, the institution where the disputation were held and whether the applicant were main or co-supervisor.
• PhD Diploma
• List of reference persons: names and contact details of 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and phone number)

In the evaluation of the qualified candidates the full range of these criteria will be explicitly addressed and assessed.

Interviews will be held and references collected. Applicants will also be required to give a research seminar for the Department and possibly also a trial lecture for the Department’s students.

Formal regulations

The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document basic teaching qualifications will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period.

The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of both English and one of the Scandinavian languages as working languages. If an appointee is not fluent in a Scandinavian language, the appointee will be expected within a two-year period to learn sufficient Norwegian to be able to participate actively in all functions the position may involve.
