The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences overall objective is to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health. The Institute is responsible for teaching in basic medical sciences for the programmes of professional study in medicine and the Master's programme in clinical nutrition. The Institute has more than 300 employees and is located in Domus Medica.

Job description

A permanent position is available at the Department of Molecular Medicine, Division of Physiology, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, for an Associate Professor in medicine in the subject area of physiology.

Current research activities in the Division of Physiology include topics related to the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, and functional interactions between them. We wish to recruit a candidate with a research focus in physiology that synergizes with the Division´s ongoing research, and more particularly in systems physiology.

As successful applicant, you will be able to establish a dynamic and innovative research program with potential to recruit high caliber PhD students and postdocs from external funding. You will be expected to initiate and lead research, supervise PhD candidates, secure external funding, participate in teaching and in exam duties and carry out administrative tasks. Qualification requirements

For Associate Professor:

  • PhD or equivalent academic qualifications with a specialization in physiology
  • A strong background in physiology research
  • Documented pedagogical skills (formal education and/or experience)
  • Experience with supervision of PhD or master students
  • Successful acquisition of extramural funding
  • Experience with project management as principal investigator
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish, or a plan for obtaining this within 2 years (see formal regulations below).

We aim to recruit a candidate in a rising career phase who has already demonstrated a promising research trajectory. Candidates must fulfil all qualification requirements above. In addition, you must provide a clear research plan and external funding strategy. A degree in medicine (MD or equivalent) is considered an advantage but not mandatory for the position. High ambitions and quality of teaching, research and communication are expected.

  • From the above list, a short-list of up to 5 publications particularly relevant for the position for which you should briefly specify your contribution and impact of the findings
  • PhD diploma and if applicable, MD diploma
  • A list of 3 references with name, relation to candidate, e-mail and phone number

In the evaluation, all these criteria will be explicitly assessed. An interview will be part of the appointment process; it will consist of a trial lecture on a pre-assigned teaching subject, a research seminar and an interview per se.
