The Department of Special Needs Education is one of the three departments at UiO's Faculty of Educational Sciences.


The department has today approximately 25 permanent employees that work with research, 14 temporary research fellows and postdoctoral fellows, in addition to 12 administrative employees. The department has approximately 800 students distributed between bachelor- and master’s degree studies in Special Needs Education, master’s degree studies in Special Needs Education, as well as PhD-studies.

Professor/Associate Professor in qualitative research methodology with relevance for special needs education

About the position

A permanent position as Professor (position code/SKO 1013) or Associate Professor (position code/SKO 1011) is available at The Department of Special Needs Education, Faculty of Educational Sciences in the subject of qualitative research methodology.

The Department of Special Needs Education at the University of Oslo is one of the four departments/centers at the Faculty of Educational Sciences. The department focuses on basic and applied research and education of bachelor-, master- and doctoral level candidates within the field of special needs education in Norway.

Job description

The current position is thematically connected to research and teaching in qualitative research methodology with relevance for the field of special needs education. Key competencies for the position include theoretical and epistemological issues, research design, innovation, data collection methods (e.g. observation, interview, multimodal methods), and data analysis methods. The successful candidate should have an outstanding international profile, scientific productivity (e.g. substantial publication record and editorial activity), and capability of network building. Candidates with backgrounds in qualitative research from related fields (e.g. educational or developmental psychology, the philosophy or sociology of education) are also encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate is expected to teach, initiate and lead research, supervise bachelor-, master- and PhD candidates, participate in exam setting and assessment at all levels and to carry out administrative duties in accordance with the needs of the Faculty of Educational Sciences. Teaching-related work accounts for 47% of the position, 47 % is allocated to research, while 6% is calculated for administrative tasks.

Main duties:

  • Promote the development of the subject area through research, publication of academic work nationally and internationally
  • Research dissemination targeted at both professional actors and the general public
  • Teaching, planning of study programs, supervision, and examination work as well as related tasks at any level
  • Active participation in attracting research funding from external sources
  • Active participation in the process of internationalization and networking
  • Active participation in relevant research groups at the faculty
  • Administrative tasks in accordance with the applicable provisions

Qualification requirements

For Associate Professor:

  • Doctoral degree or equivalent qualifications in qualitative research with relevance for special needs education or related fields (e.g. educational or developmental psychology, the philosophy or sociology of education)
  • Documented basic university pedagogical competence. This requirement may be waived in special cases, but must then be met within two years from appointment.   • Documentation of qualifications in dissemination, management and administration will count positively

For Professor:

  • Substantial academic production in excess of that which is required for a doctoral degree within the subject area of qualitative research with relevance for special needs education or related fields (e.g. educational or developmental psychology, the philosophy or sociology of education)
  • Prolonged research activity with an independent research profile

  • Broad experience in the development and implementation of teaching, supervision and work with educational quality
  • Good qualifications in dissemination management and administration

Good communication skills (written and oral) in English and Norwegian (or another Scandinavian language) are a prerequisite for performing all the tasks associated with the position. Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language at the time of appointment will be given a deadline of two years to learn Norwegian.
