The Department of Special Needs Education is one of the three departments at UiO's Faculty of Educational Sciences.


The department has today approximately 25 permanent employees that work with research, 14 temporary research fellows and postdoctoral fellows, in addition to 12 administrative employees. The department has approximately 800 students distributed between bachelor- and master’s degree studies in Special Needs Education, master’s degree studies in Special Needs Education, as well as PhD-studies.

About the position

The Department of Special Needs Education aims to further develop its strong research- and teaching environment within the subject area of speech, language and communication sciences related to special needs education. The position aims to strengthen our research and teaching within the area of developmental and acquired speech-, language- and communication disorders (logopedi), including socio-pragmatic communication disorders, fluency disorders and voice disorders. Currently, the department offers a bachelor’s (BA) degree in special needs education and five special education majors at the Master’s level; Speech and Language therapy, Hearing, language and communication, Specific learning difficulties, Psychosocial difficulties and Developmental disabilities, in addition to an international Master's program (Master in Special Needs Education).

Job description

The successful candidate is expected to teach, initiate and lead research projects, supervise bachelor-, master- and PhD candidates, and participate in examination work at all levels. The teaching will span a broad spectrum of speech, language and communication disorders in a lifelong perspective. The department’s lab, Oslo Special Education and Learning Lab (Oslo SpELL) offers an excellent possibility to incorporate research, innovation and student activities into a clinical context.

It is expected that the successful candidate will participate actively in relevant research groups at the faculty and to carry out administrative duties in accordance with the needs of the Department of Special Needs Education.

The position involves 47 % teaching, 47 % research, and 6 % administration.

The main duties of the position are:

  • Promotion of the subject area through research, publication of academic work (nationally and internationally), and participation in national and international networks
  • Participation in teaching, the planning and development of study programs, supervision and examinations, as well as related tasks at any program level
  • Research dissemination targeted at both professional actors and the general public
  • Administrative tasks in accordance with the applicable provisions
  • Active participation in attracting research funding from external sources

Qualification requirements

  • A doctoral degree or equivalent qualifications within the subject area of speech, language and communication
  • Clinical or working experience with children, adolescents, and/or adults with speech-, language, or communication disorders
  • Documented basic university pedagogical competence. This requirement may be waived in special cases, but must then be met within two years from appointment.   • Documentation of qualifications in dissemination, management and administration will count positively
  • Experience with open and reproducible science practices is an advantage
  • Good communication skills in both written and oral English and Norwegian (or another Scandinavian language) are a prerequisite for performing all the tasks associated with the position. The Department’s working-language is Norwegian. Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language at the time of appointment will be given a deadline of two years to learn Norwegian to a proficient level to conduct teaching and examination tasks.

The criteria that will be emphasized in the assessment of candidates are academic, professional and pedagogical qualifications, leadership and administrative qualifications as well as personal qualifications and communications skills. The candidate’s research activity, motivation and interest in special needs education are essential in the consideration of applicants.

We offer

  • Salary from NOK 615 800 to NOK 715 900 per annum depending on competencies, in the position of Associate Professor (position code 1011)
