Researcher position in Fish immunology and gene editing

Deadline: 11.06.2019

About the Position

The Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE), UiT The Arctic University of Norway has a researcher position vacant in Fish Immunology and Vaccinology. The position is a fixed term position for a period of two years and is attached to the Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NCFS) and the research group Fish immunology and vaccinology.

UiT The Arctic University of Norway

The Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE) consists of Department of Arctic and Marine Biology, Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NFH) and School of Business and Economics. The main task of BFE is to conduct teaching and research dissemination at a high national and international level within all relevant fields.

Prioritized research areas are aquatic and terrestrialeco systems, climate, life in the arctic, marine bioprospecting, fish health, seafood products, business and macroeconomics, resources and environment, markets and management of marine resources. The interdisciplinary profile of the faculty provides good opportunity to develop research projects involving several research groups at the faculty according to its strategy.

The Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NCFS) is a multidisciplinary unit for marine research and education.

NCFS have established research environments for resource management, resource utilization and biotechnology, and is now strengthening the capacity for utilization and health related effects of seafood consumption. NCFS teaching obligation stretches trough three study programs at Bachelor and Master level; Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, Biotechnology/Marine biotechnology and Aquamedicine. In addition, NCFS offers an international master program, International Fisheries Management (IFM). All programs of are growing popularity as they are attracting more qualified students than available opportunities.

The position’s field of research

The applicant will join a dedicated and ambitious team of researchers in the fish immunology and vaccinology research group to work on the project CRISPRized Immortality. The project is funded by the Norwegian research council HAVBRUK 2018 and involves optimizing CRISPR based gene editing in Atlantic salmon. Essential to the development of next-generation fish vaccines are tools that are more sophisticated and specifically designed to study the complex and multifaceted interactions between the host’s immune response and the invading pathogens. The project will focus on developing and implementing methods for efficient genome editing in salmonid cell lines and primary cells and the use of this technique to answer important biological questions related to fish health.

As a member of the research group, you will work in close collaboration with an interdisciplinary group working on the UiT funded project FISH & CRISPR- Innovative strategies to improve salmon health. This team involves three PhD students and faculty members from research groups in Macromolecular Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry, the Pharmacology Research Group, Department of Pharmacy, as well as the Fish Immunology and Vaccinology Research Group at Norwegian College of Fishery Science.

For appointment as Researcher, the applicant should have a Norwegian doctoral degree doctoral degree in immunology, cellular biology or molecular biology, or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognised as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. If not competence at a corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality can be considered.

The suitable candidate for this position would ideally have a strong background in molecular science, molecular cloning, cell culture, cell transfections, with strong preference given to candidates with research experience working with fish immunology and salmonid model systems and/or CRISPR gene editing.
