At the Norwegian Veterinary Institute, section for epidemiology, there are two available positions as Researcher – veterinary epidemiology.

To further strengthen our capacity within the field of veterinary epidemiology, the Norwegian Veterinary Institute, Oslo, section for epidemiology is looking for researchers for permanent full-time positions.

Veterinary epidemiology is becoming increasingly important in Norway in order to secure sustainable livestock and aquaculture production both economically, environmentally and in regard to human and animal health in the future.

Section for epidemiology currently has about 20 researchers within the fields of epidemiology, disease spread modelling, risk assessment, health economics, biostatistics and bioinformatics and the section has a large project portfolio.

Content

We are looking for researchers to run projects, initiate research activities and apply for projects within the fields of fish- and animal health and food safety. The research will be performed in close collaboration with other sections at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute and other national and international institutions or partners. The main tool for statistics and programming in the research group is “R”. We utilize a wide variety of the opportunities in R, such as data handling and manipulation, basic and advanced statistics, as well as development of interactive web based applications using the shiny package. The group works together to maintain and extend our existing source code as well as develop new scripts and workflows. The duties will include tasks on behalf of the government and public sector as well as for the aquaculture and animal industries. This includes disease contingency tasks and epidemiological and statistical disease outbreak support to the authorities.

Work tasks

• Initiate, plan and lead research projects in epidemiology including scientific dissemination.
• Contribute to and lead tasks within animal- and fish health, food safety and public health for the national authorities and the animal and aquaculture industries. These tasks include designing and reporting national animal health surveillance programmes.
• The successful candidates will also give epidemiological support to other sections of the institute, and contribute in tasks related to disease contingency and outbreak.

Qualifications

Required background:

• MSc in veterinary medicine, epidemiology, public health or related field.
• Good oral and written skills in English.

The following skills and competences will be valued:

• PhD in veterinary medicine, epidemiology or public health.
• Interest in epidemiological research.
• Experience with scientific publication
• Experience with scientific leadership.
• Knowledge of the Norwegian agriculture and/or aquaculture sector, including public administration within these sectors.
• Good skills in a Scandinavian language.

Personal qualities such as the ability to work in a team and dedication to research in the area of fish- and/or animal health will be valued as well as creativity and ability to take personal responsibility for duties in a project.

Contract and salary

The current position is offered as a full time (37,5hr per week) position.

The salary follows the regulations set by the Norwegian State for the category of researcher in code 1108 (current yearly gross salary 505 800 – 607 700), 1109 (current yearly gross salary 544 400 – 670 000 NOK), 1110 (current yearly gross salary 631 700 – 695 500 NOK) or in code 1183 (current yearly gross salary 695 500 – 848 800 NOK) depending on qualifications. There is a compulsory deduction of 2% of the salary to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
