To further strengthen our capacity within the field of veterinary epidemiology, the Norwegian Veterinary Institute, Oslo, section for epidemiology is looking for researchers for permanent full-time positions.

Veterinary epidemiology is becoming increasingly important in Norway in order to secure sustainable livestock and aquaculture production both economically, environmentally and in regard to human and animal health in the future.

Section for epidemiology currently has about 20 researchers within the fields of epidemiology, disease spread modelling, risk assessment, health economics, biostatistics and bioinformatics and the section has a large project portfolio.

Content

We are looking for a researcher that can set to work on running projects, initiate research activities and apply for projects to find answers to challenges and questions related to health of fish and aquatic organisms. The research and contract work of the section is performed in close collaboration with other sections at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute and other national and international institutions or partners. The main tool for statistics and programming in the research group is “R”. We utilize a wide variety of the opportunities in R, such as data handling and manipulation, basic and advanced statistics, as well as the development of interactive web based applications using the shiny package. The group works closely together to maintain and extend our existing source code as well as develop new scripts and workflows. The duties will also include tasks on behalf of the government and public sector as well as for the aquaculture industry. This includes disease contingency tasks and epidemiological and statistical disease outbreak support to the authorities.

Work tasks

Initiate, plan and lead research projects in aquaculture disease epidemiology including scientific dissemination to stakeholders as the Ministry of Fisheries, the Food Safety authority and the Norwegian aquaculture industry.

Develop and implement complex disease spread models to support control of disease by the government and Norwegian aquaculture industry. This includes development of tools for data processing and presentation of data.

Contribute in and lead tasks in epidemiology and statistics at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute or other institutions or project partners.

Qualifications

Required background:

• A PhD in epidemiology, ecology or other relevant subject.
• Experience with applied statistical data analysis and mathematical modeling of biological, ecological, population or animal production data.
• A good publication record.
• Good written and oral skills in English.

The following skills and competences will be valued:

• Experience of, or interest in, acquisition of and participation in international projects (i.e EU projects).
• Knowledge of the aquaculture and animal primary production in Norway.
• Scientific leadership.
• Skills of population dynamics and spatial analyses.
• Good skills in a Scandinavian language are valued.
• Experience with supervising PhD candidates.

Personal qualities such as the ability to work in a team and dedication to research in the area of fish- and/or animal health will be valued as well as creativity and ability to take personal responsibility for duties in a project.

Contract and salary

The current position is offered as a full time (37,5hr per week) position.

The salary follows the regulations set by the Norwegian State for the category of researcher in code 1109 (current yearly gross salary 544 400 – 670 000 NOK), 1110 (current yearly gross salary 631 700 – 695 500 NOK) or in code 1183 (current yearly gross salary 695 500 – 848 800 NOK) depending on qualifications. There is a compulsory deduction of 2% of the salary to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
