LEDIG STILLING VED SINTEF

Research scientist – numerical modelling and interoperability

Deadline: 05.01.2022

SINTEF

SINTEF is one of Europe's largest research organisations, with multidisciplinary expertise in the fields of technology, the natural sciences and the social sciences. SINTEF is an independent foundation and has conducted contract research and development projects for the private and public sectors since 1950. SINTEF has 2000 employees from 75 countries and annual revenues of three billion Norwegian kroner.

Vision: Technology for a better society.

SINTEF Ocean is one of the six institutes that make up SINTEF. We conduct research and generate innovation in the field of ocean space for both Norwegian and international industries. Our ambition is to advance Norway’s leading position in the fields of marine engineering and biomarine research. We work closely with the business sector and the public authorities to develop tomorrow’s sustainable solutions for exploitation of the oceans. Our head office is in Trondheim, and we have branch offices in Tromsø, Oslo, Ålesund, Bergen and Hirtshals in Denmark.

SINTEF is looking for the next generation of problem solvers

SINTEF is one of Europe's largest independent research institutes. For over 70 years, we have contributed to growth, innovations and solutions for our customers and for society. Each day we work together with our customers to create benefits for society and drive competition. The UN's Sustainability Goals serve as the guiding principles for SINTEF's work, and our vision is technology for a better society.

The key to solving many of today's challenges can be found in the ocean. SINTEF Ocean develops the ocean industries of the future within the areas of food, energy, environment and transport. We are currently looking for a new colleague in Trondheim to strengthen our team within the areas of modelling, industrial digitalisation and software development.

The research group for Environmental Technology and Modelling works primarily with the development of numerical tools and modelling of transport, fate and degradation of marine emissions and marine pollution. We conduct projects within various domains such as offshore energy, aquaculture and mineral extraction, where the environmental impacts of marine pollution are in focus. The group is a part of the Climate and Environment department at SINTEF Ocean. Our task is to contribute to the sustainable development and utilisation of the ocean and ocean-based resources while creating as little environmental impact as possible. We accomplish this by developing scientific modelling tools with high professional quality, and then making them available for the public, our customers and our clients.

We are looking for a research scientist with a MSc, PhD or equivalent competency within numerical physics, applied mathematics, industrial digitalisation and software development or equivalent fields. It is preferable that you have experience with project leadership and/or coordination of larger program-development processes such as, for example, research-based EU projects. Experience with programming is a prerequisite, preferably related to the implementation of service-based solutions, machine learning and numerical methods. You will participate in projects where we collaborate with Norwegian and international partners from industry and academia. The position will be tightly connected to our participation in an array of projects that work with improving methods for digital representation, digital twins and data analysis aimed at environmental technology. We work both in teams and across disciplines, both within and outside of the department. The right candidate is curious and willing to learn about other fields and enjoys working closely with others.

Your workday will consist of the following tasks, among others:

  • Software development for improving methods for digital information exchange, interaction between heterogenous systems, cloud-based services and open innovation systems (As an example, see "Representation of materials connected to the work of the European Materials Modelling Council (EMMC)" https://emmc.eu).
  • Generation, development and leadership of research projects.
  • You will join a project team on various projects and collaborate with customers from both Norwegian and international industry, other research institutes and colleagues from other parts of SINTEF.

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate, master's degree or equivalent research experience from numerical physics, applied mathematics, environmental modelling or similar with clear contributions to numerical modelling and method development
  • Experience with project leadership and/or coordination of larger program-development processes. Please describe your experience with the use of best practice methods in various stages of a (program) development life cycle.
  • An interest for working with environmental technology for sustainability in the marine environment
  • Documentable experience with knowledge representations (taxonomies and ontologies) for interoperability of data and modelling tools is desirable
  • Good analytical skills and a systematic approach to problems
  • Willingness to take on exciting new challenges to further develop your own professional competency
  • Skills for working well both independently and in teams, with the ability to build and maintain good professional networks
  • Good written and oral communication skills in Norwegian and/or other Scandinavian language, together with English

What we offer:

  • A world-leading research environment, with a large societal impact
  • A dynamic work environment that values diversity and initiative
  • A varied and flexible workday
  • Unique opportunities for professional and personal development in an environment where the majority of researchers have a doctorate degree
  • Competitive salary with good welfare benefits
  • A modern pension scheme and top-notch insurance scheme

Welcome to SINTEF as the person you are, and as the person you want to become!
