Deadline 15.09.2018

Institute of Marine Research

The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) is the biggest research institute of its kind in Europe, with over 1,000 employeesand a wide range of research facilities and laboratories of high international standard. Our main activities are research, advisory work and monitoring. The Institute owns and operates six research vessels.

Our main offices are in Bergen, and we have a department in Tromsø and research stations in Matre, Austevoll and Flødevigen. In January 2018, the IMR was merged with NIFES – The National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research. The new institute will be a leading supplier of knowledge relating to the sustainable management of the resources in our marine ecosystems and the whole food chain from the sea to the table.

About the position:

The group works on research, monitoring, and providing advice on demersal fish species, using biological, statistical, and computer models.

The group works in close collaboration with other research groups at IMR and contributes to associated research fields, including impacts of climate change, ecology, and integrated ecosystem-based management. Extensive research collaboration with national and international institutions is expected and encouraged

Areas of research:

The principal areas of research for the research scientist will include monitoring of demersal fish stocks in Norwegian marine ecosystems based on both catch sampling and scientific surveys. The scientist will be expected to take part in field work, including several week-long surveys at sea. Furthermore, the scientist will carry out assessment of present and future stock sizes of main commercial fish species using state-of-the art quantitative assessment models.

The scientist is expected to contribute to international expert groups on, e.g., fish stock assessment, advice, and catch sampling, and participate in public and stakeholder meetings to present and discuss the advice. Initiating, participating and contributing to research projects, both national and international is expected, with contribution to the REDUS project (reduced uncertainty in stock assessment and development of analytical stock assessment methods - www.redus.no) a current priority (until 2020).

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent degree in fisheries biology, statistics, applied mathematics, applied statistics, fish population modeling, ecological modeling, or a related quantitative field. Experience in fisheries management and field work (fisheries surveys) is a benefit.

The successful candidate should have strong quantitative skills as well as extensive experience and skill in programming and modelling (skills in R will be a benefit). The ability to work independently, in teams, and to deliver results (reports, analyses, papers) according to deadlines is essential. Good communication skills and willingness to communicate both to scientific and public audiences is important. Working in multi-disciplinary teams will be an important part of the position. Fluent oral and written skills in English are required. A working knowledge of the Norwegian language is not required, but language training courses in Norwegian will be offered; it is expected that candidates will give priority to gaining proficiency in Norwegian.

We offer:

The work place will be at IMR in Bergen. We offer a positive, challenging, and creative work environment, the opportunity to work at a national institute with a high level of international contact, flexible working hours, and a wide range of welfare services.

The institute offers a governmentally regulated salary as a research scientist (salary code 1109) or as senior research scientist (salary code 1110), depending on qualifications. For employment as 1110 research scientist a formal competency assessment is required. The assessment is carried out by an expert committee.
