The Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU) is an independent institute for applied R&D and for services within the wider field of Cultural Heritage in Norway and abroad. Our focus is on cultural heritage as an asset for society. We work nationally and internationally with public authorities, other research institutions, international organisations, private enterprises and NGOs on projects ranging from entire landscapes and cities to individual buildings and objects.

Archaeologist with knowledge of digital documentation, laser scanning, image-based modelling or similar?

We are looking for a researcher for the DCL (Digital documentation, Cultural Heritage and Landscape) department at NIKUs head office in Oslo. The applicant must have obtained a PhD in archaeology (or if from another field a strong track record of academic work in the field of archaeology) specialising in one or more of the following subjects: cultural heritage, digital documentation, surveying, GIS, geophysics, image-based modelling (photogrammetry), laser scanning, LIDAR, software engineering and data science.

Relevant candidates must have solid research skills, have a strong publication record and some experience with active research funding acquisition. The candidate we look for has good networking skills, and a drive to develop good research projects for NIKU.

It is expected that the applicant can both work independently, as well as collaboratively within teams both initiating and coordinating new research initiatives.

Main tasks:

  • Scientific publishing and dissemination of research results.
  • Participation in and taking the lead in research projects, nationally and internationally.
  • Initiate and contribute to developing proposals for relevant research programs.
  • Participate in research and development, commissioned research and archaeological consultancy services.
  • Active networking building within relevant fields.

Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in a relevant subject.
  • Experience from multi- and transdisciplinary research projects.
  • Experience of writing research proposals to the Norwegian Research Council, European Research Council or other relevant research programs.
  • Knowledge of digital surveying, prospection and cultural heritage documentation.
  • Good written and spoken skills in a Scandinavian language, and fluent English. Foreign language candidates are expected to write and speak English fluently and have excellent communication skills. We expect the candidate to learn written and spoken Norwegian within the first two or three years of employment. Relevant courses will be offered.
