Two scientific developer positions on atmospheric and oceanographic dispersion modelling

Two permanent positions as scientists/developers in the field of atmospheric and oceanographic transport/drift modelling related to nuclear accidents, volcanic eruptions, oil drift and search and rescue are open at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway).

MET Norway (https://met.no) provides the society at large with meteorological services for both civilian and military purposes. Weather forecasting, on demand services, climate monitoring and research and development within meteorology and oceanography are prioritized activities.

Modern meteorology requires management and analysis of enormous amounts of data, and offers great and exciting professional challenges. Since the institute was established in 1866, the Norwegian meteorologists have played a key role in this development. Norwegian Meteorological Institute is today a leading international environment of expertise in operational meteorology and climatology.

Our main goal is to help protect life and property.

To achieve this we run a suite of limited area forecast models for the atmosphere, the ocean and the oceanic wave field as well as a number of downstream services based on these forecasts. An important task is the development, running and maintenance of our suite of dispersion and drift models for our emergency preparedness services. These include models for the dispersion of radioactive material and volcanic ash in the atmosphere. A similar suite of oceanic trajectory models allow forecasts of the fate of oil as well as the drift of ships and search-and-rescue objects. These services are developed for our governmental end users.

Responsibility

The successful applicants will work within the field of dispersion and trajectory modelling in the ocean and atmosphere for contingency/emergency preparedness (e.g. drift of oil, dispersion of ash plumes and radioactivity). She/he will contribute to the development of our transport and trajectory models as well as the dissemination of model results, technical implementation and advanced scientific diagnosis of results both independently and in cooperation with others. Our scientific activities will partly depend on external funding, and the candidate is expected to contribute to the acquisition of relevant projects.

The successful applicants will work together with the emergency modelling group, consisting of meteorologists, IT personnel and other modellers as well as our end users to deliver model results in a seamless production.

The work place will be

  • Oslo for the position on atmospheric dispersion modelling
  • Bergen for the position on oceanic trajectory modelling.

Qualifications

  • PhD or MSc in meteorology, oceanography, physics, applied mathematics, or computer science
  • documented skills in scientific programming
  • familiarity with UNIX/LINUX, and both strongly and weakly typed programming languages (Python and Fortran or C)
  • ability to work independently while also collaborating in teams is required
  • experience from scientific collaboration is important
  • candidates must be able to work effectively in English and demonstrate fluency, written and oral
  • the working language at MET Norway is Norwegian, and foreign candidates must be willing to learn basic Norwegian

Experience with the following is an advantage

  • atmospheric and/or ocean modelling
  • standardized data formats such as NetCDF/CF, HDF5
  • distribution of model data through THREDDS and OPeNDAP
  • High Performance computing environments, parallelization and optimization of model code
  • Web-services and/or OGC services (WPS, WMS, WMTS)

In addition, the candidate must have good communication skills, both for program documentation and/or scientific writing and presentations.
