BI Norwegian Business School (BI), Department of Law and Governance, invites applications for one or two positions as either Associate Professor or Professor of Law, with special focus on Financial Markets Law and Financial Regulation (including private and public law).

The position includes research and teaching responsibilities at all levels. We are looking for a candidate with strong research capabilities and the ambition to advance the field with publications in top international journals. The candidate should demonstrate solid teaching skills. Practical experience from private or public practice is also highly valued.

The Department of Law and Governance has an ambition to increase its impact both nationally and internationally. The Department is responsible for courses at Bachelor, Master of Science, MBA and Executive Level and is currently home to about 40 full-time academic faculty and 5 PhD students. The Department has also established a Center for Financial Regulation, which has as ambition to be the main national academic center for research within financial regulation.

Since the financial crisis, both financial markets and the regulation of them have reached a degree of complexity that mandates careful attention from the academic community. The field suffers, however, from lack of staff with sufficient practical and theoretical understanding. This is unfortunate given the societal importance of financial markets and their institutions. The Department of Law and Governance wishes therefore to strengthen its research and teaching efforts in this field. For the purposes of these positions, research on ‘financial markets’ and ‘financial regulation’ means research on the regulation of capital markets, banking and energy markets, their institutions and activities.

The applicants should have completed a PhD in Law and must be able to document scientific qualifications at a high level and be able to engage in an interdisciplinary research environment related to the disciplines of law, economics and finance. Emphasis will also be placed on the applicants’ experience with attracting and managing relationship with key stakeholders in the finance community, with the aim of strengthening the position of BI and attracting research funding. Experience with comparative law can significantly contribute to publication in highly-ranked journals and with pedagogical techniques and would therefore be a distinct advantage.

We expect the applicant to teach and supervise students at Bachelor’ and Master’s level and that the candidate – independently and jointly with others – contribute to developing the academic field in question through research of high international quality. The teaching involved will primarily be at the BSc and MSc in Business Law, as well as related courses on other departments. It is also expected that the applicant is willing to contribute actively to the Center for Financial Regulation, through arranging seminars and participating in discussions.

The applicant must be capable of teaching in English and Norwegian.

If an applicant’s pedagogical qualifications are insufficient, the assessment committee or the Department Council may recommend that the applicant complete pedagogical training as a condition of appointment. However, employment may be carried out under the presumption that sufficient pedagogical competence will be obtained within two years from the start date.

Qualifications will be evaluated according to the usual rules for academic positions at universities and specialized university institutions. Women are encouraged to apply.
