Responsibilities

Emerging trends in computing, communications and networking move towards distributed cloud computing and mobile edge- or fog-computing. Following these trends, computation moves closer to the edge of the network (from cloud to fog) in distributed computation spots to serve newly emerging applications with strict response deadlines. At the same time, new and emerging technologies, such as blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) can help to facilitate a distributed and decentralized Internet Governance model. In this emerging field of research, several open problems need to be solved.

Research topics for the postdoctoral fellow include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Improving the scalability of blockchain technology as well as novel consensus algorithms and network/token economics.
  • Combination of the above topics, or more, in particular, the integration of blockchain /DLT to solve networking, security and privacy issues at the edge of the mobile part of the network.
  • Design and development of application-specific (e.g., eHealth, IoT) communication and information infrastructure for both mobile, opportunistic communications environments, but also for fixed, edge-fog-computing networks covering both pure networking aspects and aspects related to security, privacy, and trust for (network and token) economics of future networks.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in the blockchain technology, proven programming skills, and an excellent background in one of the relevant research areas (access control models, cryptography and cryptographic protocols, privacy-preserving technologies, distributed systems, trust models).
