The Institute of Clinical Medicine (Klinmed) is one of three institutes under the Faculty. Klinmed is responsible for the Faculty's educational and research activities at Oslo University Hospital and Akershus University Hospital. With about 800 employees spread over approximately 425 man-labour years, Klinmed is the university's largest institute. Our activities follow the clinical activity at the hospitals and are spread across a number of geographical areas.

Akershus University Hospital is the largest acute hospital in Norway, and local and area hospital for close to 10% of the Norwegian population. We have a fast growing research environment in the field of medicine and health sciences. Professor II/Associate Professor 20% position of geriatricsis

The Institute of Clinical Medicine has a vacant position as Adjunct Professor (professor II)/Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis) of geriatrics. A part-timeacademic position (20%) is combined with a full-time (100%) senior consultant position in geriatrics at Akershus University Hospital, Department of Geriatric medicine.

Relating the main position:Department of geriatric medicine is organized under the Division of Medicine. The department is, despite its name, the last established in the hospital. The department has during the first seven years developed a ward of 23 acute geriatric beds with a multidisciplinary team, started up an outpatient clinic as well as initiated new services in the hospital, eg. orthogeriatrics every weekdays and onco-geriatric liaison service.

The department contribute to real awareness of geriatrics in our large hospital, and experiences increased demand for geriatric services. Due to the size and patient composition the hospital is well suited for pragmatic trials. Due to this, the employee will be in position and at the same time highly expected to integrate academic work and way of thinking into daily practice and operations, and thus inspire clinicians to contribute to clinically relevant research, pragmatic studies and bedside teaching. The successful applicant will have an important role in shaping our future research, teaching of medical students and research fellows.

The successful candidate is expected to have extensive research experience in geriatric medicine with ongoing research activity and contribute to further scientific and professional development in the department, including initiation of doctoral projects.

Senior physicians in the department participate in weekend duty every eight week are also doing ward rounds and seeing outpatients.

By appointment, 40 % of the senior consultant position is expected to be used for research and teaching.

About the position

The Institute of Clinical Medicine has a vacant position as Professor II or Associate Professor (depending on academic qualifications) at the Institute of Clinical Medicine, Division of Medicine and Laboratory Sciences. The part-time professorship (20%) is combined with a fulltime (100%) senior consultant position at the Department of geriatric medicine, Akershus University Hospital.

Applicants should hold a strong record in research within geriatric medicine and should also have ongoing research activity. It is expected that the successful candidate will develop a strong research network within the department and the institution, as well as nationally and internationally, and be able to obtain research funding from external sources. Ability to create an attractive and stimulating academic environment within the department and attract PhD students and postdoctoral fellows is essential. The successful applicant will also participate in teaching of medical students in geriatric medicine at the University of Oslo.

The main position and the part time position are combined. It is a requisition that the position holder has both positions. If the main position is left, the part-time position must also be vacated. If one is granted leave from the main position, the question of whether the part-time position can be held will be evaluated by the Head of Institute.

According to the regulations at the Faculty of Medicine, the person appointed will lead and initiate research, supervise researchers, participate in teaching students and research fellows and undertake duties in connection with examinations, as well as undertaking administrative tasks as required by the prevailing regulations. The Faculty is responsible for teaching (including conducting examinations) for the programmes of professional study in medicine/dentistry and the faculty's bachelor and master programmes. The Faculty is also responsible for providing organised research training. The professorial duties include teaching these groups, including non subject specific supervision tasks, such as PBL-groups (Problem Based Learning) in accordance with the current needs of the faculty, within by the guidelines for working hours in professorial positions. The person appointed is expected to participate in assessment committees for PhD theses, assessment committees regarding appointments and competence promotions, and to take the role as acting dean in disputations

Requirements:

  • Authorization and medical license issued by the Norwegian Directorate of Health
  • Certified qualifications in the specialty of geriatric medicine issued by the Norwegian Directorate of Health, this includes qualifications and willingness to fill the role as on-duty senior physician
  • Senior physicians in the department participate in weekend duty every eight week as well as going rounds and see outpatients
  • Foreign applicants may apply, with the requirement that they obtain Norwegian medical authorisation and certification in the specialty of geriatric medicine before joining the position
  • Applicants must speak Norwegian, Swedish or Danish to be capable to communicate with the patients in the ward/outpatient clinic
  • Hold a strong record in research within geriatric medicine with on-going research activity
  • Applicants must have good cooperative and communication skills

Interpersonal skills and the ability to create an attractive research environment, plans for research and ambitions relating to the applicant's personal teaching practice will be emphasized. The successful applicant will participate in teaching of medical students at the University of Oslo. As a main rule, interviews will be held and references collected. Applicants may also be required to give a trial lecture.
