About System Oriented Design

There is a growing need for Systems Oriented Design (SOD) or similar methodologies, due to the increasing degree of complexity in our society where designers are constantly taking on new roles.

At the Institute of Design, we have developed the theories and practices of SOD through teaching and research since 2007. SOD is an overarching approach and methodology that crosses the institute’s other disciplines: Industrial Design, Interaction Design and Service Design.

We offer a 5-year Master in Design and SOD is introduced at the undergraduate level and has its own Master's courses. SOD is integrated into several of the research projects at the Institute. SOD explores a number of different problem areas spanning from health, government and policy to media and new technology in relation to Systems Engineering.

The position will have approximately 30-40% teaching responsibility. This will be planned with the Head of the Institute as well as the chair of SOD, and can be negotiated, depending on research involvement.

Tasks related to the position

  • Teaching SOD at bachelor and master's level and have administrative responsibility for the courses.
  • Contributing to the curriculum in SOD and across the institute
  • Administrative management and academic contributions from R & D projects, as well as writing project application
  • Contributing to publications and dissemination of R & D results.
  • It is expected that he or she will continue his / her own professional development within SOD

Qualification requirements

The applicant should have the following qualifications:

  • A master’s degree or equivalent in design are preferable but other relevant fields will be considered
  • Experience with professional practice of design or other relevant work. (In order to be qualified as an Associate Professor the candidate must demonstrate breadth and specialization in their portfolio with a minimum of 6 years’ experience)
  • Extensive experience from development and consultancy projects with external partners is desirable.
  • Interest for both theoretical and practical development and orientation of the field of Systemic deign
  • Candidates who speak Norwegian or another Nordic language, will be preferred, but this is not a requirement
  • Excellent written and spoken English is required.
  • Excellent visualisation and facilitation skills and experience with Giga mapping and other SOD methods and techniques.
  • Experience from participation in research projects in design is an advantage
  • It is desirable that the candidate can document educational qualifications in the form of a university education seminar or other educational education.

The candidate’s professional qualities should include:

  • Outstanding collaboration and communication skills
  • Innovative, proactive and solution-oriented perspectives and approaches
  • Being able to support and flourish in an ambitious atmosphere with periods with high work intensity
  • Excellent pedagogic skills and related experience

The position requires residency in the Oslo region.

We offer

  • the salary level for an Assistant professor are NOK 565 500-646 700 and for an Associate professor NOK 619 300-713600 per year, depending on the applicant’s qualifications
  • a pension agreement with the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, with 2% of the salary deducted for the social security fund
  • standard terms applicable for the position
