The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) is a specialized university and a leading international architecture and design school that provides education within architecture, landscape architecture, urbanism and design. AHOs fields of knowledge focus on design in all scales, objects, buildings, urban areas and landscaping. AHO is organized into four institutes, and has approx. 700 students and 145 employees.


The Institute of Design adopts a broad, holistic approach to design that emphasizes the relevance and importance of design within our contemporary society. It teaches and researches within the fields of industrial design, interaction design, service design, and systems oriented design, as well as themes that go across these disciplines, such as healthcare or maritime industry. Our perspective is that good design creates aesthetic and functional products, services, and experiences that delight and improve the lives of their users.

About the position

Interaction design is one of the main domains across the Institute of Design’s 5 year Master programme - including teaching, research and collaboration with industry. Interaction design is an integrated part of the curriculum across this 5 year programme, with a particular emphasis on the last 2 years. Interaction design at AHO has seen a growing demand for teaching staff, and we are now looking to extend our staff with a 4 year 40% position.

We are currently looking for a highly motivated person to fill a 40% position in interaction design. This Assistant Professor will be responsible for teaching courses on undergraduate and Master level alongside existing teaching staff. This position will be responsible for teaching curriculum that covers various parts of interaction design, with a focus on creativity, design methods, film-making and communication, concepts development, activism and exploration, as well as Web and screen based experiences.

We are seeking someone with experience from a broad range of (digital) design projects, both artistic, communicative and commercial with a focus on creativity, exploration and experimentation. The applicant’s own practice and experience could cover both technical and design-related themes from across design. A broad design-background that also covers service or industrial design would also be prioritized. We are looking for someone with a flourishing design practice besides this teaching position to secure relevance and contact with the industry on different levels. We would welcome someone with an outspoken proactive and holistic approach to design to make impact on society.

The applicant will need to meet high international standards at all levels with a clear foundation in interaction design suited to a higher education school specializing in design. We are interested in a practiced designer who is also an accomplished educator with experience, a strong portfolio and supported by engaged pedagogy up to Master’s level.

Experience in practice-led and studio-based teaching in design school is a requirement. This person will be part of AHO’s interaction design teaching team and take part in teaching courses alongside experienced staff, but is also expected to develop and teach self-driven curriculum. This person will specifically be responsible for teaching parts of the start-up modules for the first- and second-year students where inspiration, engagement, creativity and exploration are the key learning goals. Furthermore the position will contribute across the interactions design courses throughout the curriculum. Excellent visualizations and communication skills are required, as this position is also expected to contribute to teaching sketching techniques, communication and film-making across the design disciplines, together with other faculty.

We do not seek applicants who have their primary work and qualification in computing and technology from informatics, Human Computer Interaction or technology studies.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching studio-based undergraduate and Master course with a focus on creativity and interaction design in the intersection of Web, screens and new technologies, building on exploration, creativity and prototyping.
  • Developing curriculum or projects that can contribute across AHO’s 5 year Master in Design with particular focus on design for impact, design activism and portfolio support.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a master degree or equivalent in design and document the following:

  • The applicant must document extensive experience from developing design projects in professional and/or artistic settings
  • The applications must document a high level of knowledge of and practice across interaction design, communication or related fields
  • The applications must document experience from design-led pedagogy and teaching.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, as well as a Nordic language, is a requirement.

The candidate’s professional qualities should include:

  • outstanding collaboration and communication skills
  • innovative, proactive and solution-oriented perspectives and approaches
  • being able to support and flourish in an ambitious atmosphere with periods with high work intensity
  • excellent pedagogic skills and related experience

We offer

  • the salary for the position will be between pay level NOK 565 500 - 646 700 per year, depending on the applicant’s qualifications
