Our staff research, teach and disseminate knowledge from a variety of academic fields. Co-creation of knowledge is our common vision. We offer a broad range of study programmes in many fields. We are situated at two modern campuses in Kristiansand and Grimstad respectively.

We are an open and inclusive university marked by a culture of cooperation. The aim of the university is to further develop education and research at a high international level.

About the position

A 100 % position is available at the University of Agder (UiA), Faculty of Engineering and Science as a PhD Research Fellow in Mechatronics, affiliated to the Department of Engineering Sciences, for a period of three years. The position is located, at the present, at Campus Grimstad. The starting date is negotiable with the faculty.

The PhD research fellow will become a part of the UiA priority research centre - Top Research Centre Mechatronics (TRCM), working in close collaboration with the Institute of Marine Research (HI) - Flødevigen Research Station, Center for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR), and Centre for Coastal Research (CCR).

Research topics

Research topics for the PhD research fellow include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Mechatronics – product development
  • Underwater camera systems
  • Computer vision in unstructured environments
  • Data fusion
  • Real-time systems

Responsibilities

The PhD research fellow will be the main contributor to one of three work packages, responsible for developing an intelligent multi-camera system for underwater observatories in weather-exposed coastal areas to enable continuous real-time monitoring in 3D. The fellow will perform research on methods for the fusion of multiple underwater 3D camera nodes and video streaming in real-time to shore for monitoring and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Check out the following research articles to see examples of what the developed vision system will be used for in combination with AI:

  • A contrastive learning approach for individual re-identification in a wild fish population
  • Temperate fish detection and classification: a deep learning based approach
  • Unlocking the potential of deep learning for marine ecology: overview, applications, and outlook

The position is connected to an ongoing research collaboration between UiA and HI, which is leading this research project named “The legacy of Dannevig: development of automated coastal surveillance.”

The work package will be carried out in four phases, several of which are partly parallel:

1. Development of simulation environment and scenarios

2. Concept development, algorithm development (3D computer vision), simulator testing, and initial environmental testing of the underwater camera housing

3. System development, detailed design, prototype production, verification of camera system, network and processing solutions on land

4. Full-scale underwater testing in the coastal zone
