The Department of Informatics (IFI) is one of nine departments belonging to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. IFI is Norway’s largest university department for general education and research in Computer Science and related topics.


The Department has more than 1400 students on bachelor level, 600 master students, and over 240 PhDs and postdocs. The overall staff of the Department is close to 370 employees, about 280 of these in full time positions. The full time scientific staff is 75, mostly Full/Associate Professors.

A position as administrative coordinator/scientist is available for three years at the Centre for Bioinformatics. The position consists of two components of equal importance, one as a senior administrative coordinator, to work with the centre leader towards strategic goals of the centre, including funding efforts, national and international relations, and one component of research activities underpinning the centre’s research topics.

The starting date will be as soon as possible after, October 1st, 2019.

The newly formed Centre for bioinformatics is hosted by the Department of Informatics, and is organized across the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural sciences, but also incorporates activities from the other faculties.

The centre consists of five scientific groups, and also hosts the regional activities of ELIXIR Norway, the Norwegian bioinformatics infrastructure project. The centre’s research groups are involved in activities spanning from metagenomics, comparative genomics to complex disease genomics and various aspects of precision medicine, and have numerous collaborations with nationally leading research groups in these areas, at universities and hospitals. We wish to expand methodologically within machine learning, computational modelling and molecular integration, applied within our main topic areas: Genome dynamics, comparative genomics and precision medicine.

Work tasks

Administrative support to the Centre leader and PIs

  • Assistance in Centre-related funding efforts
  • Help in coordination, planning and execution of centre activities, such as scientific meetings and workshops, visits from individuals and groups
  • Contribution to maintaining the Centre web pages, profiling in social media and other communication channels
  • Support activities related to dissemination of research
  • Assistance with recruitment to the centre

Academic research, preferably related to one or more centre topic areas

  • Genome dynamics
  • Comparative genomics
  • Precision medicine

Qualification requirements

Required qualifications and competence:

  • A doctoral degree within bioinformatics, or related domains, such as computer science, genetics, genomics, molecular biology or similar, with strong practical experience within bioinformatics. Relevant work experience may compensate for the education requirement
  • Excellent communication skills, both to the scientific community and to a broader audience
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Norwegian and English, both written and spoken

Desired qualifications and competence:

  • Knowledge of the Norwegian universities and higher education system, research institutes, the Research Council of Norway, EU and their instruments
  • Knowledge of research politics and collaboration between academia, industry and government
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary research
  • Experience from dissemination of research

  • Excellent collaborative and social skills, and easy approachability

  • Ability for independent work and driving processes to completion
  • Ability to work across traditional disciplinary borders, create trust and build networks
  • Communicate well in an outgoing and active manner both orally and in writing, also using digital channels, and be outgoing, active and a good representative for the Centre
