One PhD position in Molecular immunology is available for 3 years with a possibility for a fourth year with 25% compulsory teaching and supervision duties and research assistance at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Department of Molecular Medicine. The position is funded by a grant from the Institute of Basal Medical Sciences.

The PhD Candidate will work in the group Molecular Immunology, led by Professor Anne Spurkland. The group is in the fore front of the characterization of the Lck adapter molecule “T cell specific adapter protein” or SH2D2A. The group identified this gene in human activated T cells and has examined the signal transduction pathways which are modulated by this protein in T cells. Recent work of the group focuses on the role of TSAd in T cell activation and in development of disease, in particular cancer and multiple sclerosis. The group has established strong collaborations with scientists from Sweden, UK and the USA.

More about the position

The fellowship period is 3 years and devoted to carrying out a project entitled “TSAd as a target for immunotherapy”. The project will identify novel interaction partners to TSAd in T cells.

The work will involve immunological techniques such as advanced flowcytometry (imaging flowcytometry), Western blotting, immunoprecipitation and molecular biology techniques such as mass spectrometry analysis of complex protein samples, cloning, protein expression, transient expression of plasmids in cell lines and primary cells and mutagenesis of cell lines using CRISPR-Cas9 technology.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the research training program at the Faculty of Medicine. The admission must be approved within three months. For more information see:

Qualification requirements

  • The applicants must document the following qualifications: either a medical degree (M.D. or equivalent such as cand. med.) or a master’s degree (120 ECTS; minimum grade B ECTS grading scale) or equivalent. The master’s degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS and be in a subject relevant to the position, such as biology, medicine, molecular biology, pharmacology, immunology, physiology chemistry or biochemistry. Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English. For teaching assignments, fluency in a Scandinavian language is mandatory.

The group is interested in hiring an enthusiastic candidate The candidate should preferably have experience with immunological, biochemical or molecular techniques. Skills in flowcytometry, masspectromety or experience with CRISPR-Cas9 technology will be appreciated. Personal qualities relevant for the position will also be taken into account.
