Job description

3-year postdoctoral position to study tumor-associated macrophages in colorectal cancer is available in prof. Frode Jahnsen’s laboratory, University of Oslo. The project will be performed in close collaboration with the laboratory of prof. Henk Stunnenberg, Radboud University, Nijmegen. We are looking for a talented and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher, preferably with strong background computational biology. Prior experience in molecular biology and immunology is also desirable.

The Jahnsen group studies complex interactions between immune cells in the human gut in various disease settings and their relationship with the gut microbiota. The Stunnenberg group focuses on the molecular basis of development and differentiation emanating from the genome and epigenome in the context of health and disease with emphasis on cancer.

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

More about the position

The Jahnsen and Stunnenberg groups have recently performed a detailed characterization of the macrophage population in the intestine (Bujko, Atlasy et al, J Exp Med, 2017). By directly building on this information, this project aims to apply state-of-the-art molecular technologies to identify molecules and molecular pathways expressed by tumor-associated macrophages that can be targeted to strengthen anti-tumoral immunity in colorectal cancer.

The study will include molecular profiling of immune cells isolated within and outside colorectal cancers using RNA-seq, single cell RNA-seq and epigenetic studies. The study also includes flow cytometry/CyTOF. The clinical material will be processed in the Jahnsen lab, but the candidate will spend extended periods in the Stunnenberg lab analyzing the data.

Qualification requirements

• Interested candidates must be completing or should have obtained a Ph.D. with background in computational biology, molecular biology, immunology, cell biology, or a related discipline. Experience in cancer biology and inflammatory diseases are highly desirable but not required. In general, quality of past research is more important than experience in a specific field.
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.

• The candidate should be highly motivated and dedicated, proficient in written and spoken English
• Good team working skills are required.
