There is a vacancy for the position of associate professor in university pedagogy in the Department of Education, Faculty of Psychology.

The Department of Education was established as a separate department in 2010 and includes teacher training, pedagogical science, special education teacher training and university pedagogy. There are about 40 employees at the department.

the Faculty of Psychology offers professional study programmes for psychologists, is responsible for university teaching training for UiB's own staff, contributes to the pedagogical content of teacher training and offers academic degrees within a wide range of studies: child welfare, health promotion work, education, psychology, work and organizational psychology, and speech and language therapy. The Faculty's main focus areas in research are linked to health, education, development-related research and basic research in its broadest sense.

Work tasks

The appointee will have his/her workplace at the Department of Education, and work tasks will be associated with teaching and research within the university pedagogical environment. The position will be particularly linked with digital learning and student-active forms of learning within higher education.

The university pedagogical activity is aimed at the entire university environment. Teaching is primarily aimed towards UiB’s teachers (advanced students, research fellows and academic staff members), but also towards administrators and educational leaders. Counselling is widely embracing and is aimed at educational leaders at all levels at UiB, at the academic environment in its entirety, and at the individual. The appointee will have his/her work tasks linked with research on learning and teaching in higher education. Teaching assignments will involve development of new courses and teaching of topics within the Program for University Pedagogy. Consultancy services will be aimed at all academic environments at the university. The position will contribute to DigUiB and UiB’s initiatives for digitization and testing new forms of learning and evaluation.

Qualifications and personal qualities

  • Applicants must have defended their doctoral thesis prior to the date they submit their application. The minimum requirement to competence is achievement of a PhD in pedagogy, university pedagogy or a closely related academic field.
  • The applicant must be able to document research within an area of a topic relevant to university pedagogy.
  • Must be able to document university-level teaching experience within a university pedagogically relevant topic and be able to provide evidence of academic developmental work.
  • Must be able to demonstrate good communication skills and be able to convey research-based pedagogical perspectives to teachers and leaders across academic disciplines.
  • The applicant must have a good knowledge of the Norwegian higher education system and be able to demonstrate an understanding of university education’s significance and challenges in the national and international context.
  • Must have experience with digital learning and student-active forms of learning in higher education
  • Personal qualities that are deemed suitable will be given weight.
  • The applicant must be able to document basic pedagogical competence in teaching and guidance.

All applicants who have the necessary qualifications will be called in to an interview. Applicants may also be required to present a trial lecture as part of the appointment process. Appointees must comply with the guidelines currently applicable for the position, and the associate professor appointee is expected to become affiliated with one of the research groups in the faculty. The teaching language is normally Norwegian, but the Programme for University Teacher Training also has English-language courses.

The permanent academic positions within the Faculty of Psychology’s Program for University Pedagogy currently consist of two professors and three associate professors employed full-time. The position’s teaching responsibilities are associated with university-level pedagogical studies offered at the Department of Education and the University of Bergen.  The department currently has four research groups. The faculty wishes to bolster research-based teaching within all its areas of responsibility, and to develop an active research environment of high international standard.

There is a vacancy for a permanent position as associate professor in university pedagogy at the Faculty of Psychology. The positions will be affiliated with the Program for University Pedagogy at the Department of Education. The position will contribute to DigUiB and UiB’s initiatives to digitize and test new forms of learning and evaluation.

The university pedagogical activity is aimed at both students and staff members, and it encompasses research, offered courses and consultancy services. The appointee will have his/her work tasks linked with research on learning and teaching in higher education. Teaching duties will be associated with university-level pedagogical courses offered to ensure, among other things, quality pedagogical training for UiB’s academic staff.  It is currently required that all new employees in permanent academic positions who are unable to document basic pedagogical training must complete a training course corresponding to 20 credits. Learning activities will include one mandatory basic course (10 study credits) and various elective supplementary courses of varying scope (2.5 and 5 credits). There is a need to develop and implement several new course models within this programme.  There is also a need to develop and implement new courses for PhD students and temporary employees. Through the DigUiB project, the University of Bergen has embarked on a long-term initiative to develop digital solutions for education by establishing digital teaching forums dedicated to academic and pedagogical objectives. This position will encompass teaching tasks linked with this initiative as well as digital development; therefore, it is required that the appointee possess expertise within digital learning associated with teaching and education.  The appointee will also be required to perform major or minor consultancy services that the university pedagogical unit provides for the different academic environments at the university, as well as to participate in other general work tasks within the area of university pedagogy.

The person we are looking for must be willing to cooperate and work in a team committed to academic development and must have experience in doing such work.

The teaching language is normally Norwegian. The successful applicant will be required to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within two years after appointment.

The appointee must have basic pedagogical training.

Reference is made to the general university regulations stipulating that, as part of the normal duties of the position and within his/her academic field, the successful applicant may also be required to teach, supervise and carry out examination-related tasks outside the organizational unit to which the position belongs. The Faculty of Psychology requires residency.
