The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacant position as PhD Research Fellow in 2D materials enhanced optical sensors for biological MEMS.

The Research Fellow will be affiliated with the Department of Microsystems and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Campus Vestfold in Horten.

Qualifications reguirements

All applicants must have a Master’s degree or education at an equivalent level related to the field of research of the respective position. According to the formal PhD regulations, an average grade B or better from the Master’s degree, in addition to a grade B or better of the final master project, is required. The degree of the applicant must have been awarded before  the commencement date of the PhD project.

Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken.

The staff at the Faculty work in different research teams, and the candidate must be motivated to share his or her knowledge and cooperate. Personal suitability for the position will be emphasized.

Admission as a research fellow is made on the condition of appointment to the doctoral programme in Applied Micro- and Nanosystems.

Information about the position

The project aims to develop a novel concept of optical sensors for ultrasensitive biosensing, which is innovatively enhanced by 2D materials such as, molybdenum disulfide, graphene, and even organic chemical (2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaaminotriphenylene), etc. Ultrahigh photo-responsivity and strong gain requiring lower power consumption will be the main challenges to be conquered together with the team members for this project. Thin-film optical semiconductors made of polymers, organic molecules or quantum dots free from heavy metals are alternative solutions. The research will address the fundamentals of combining high carrier mobility of the 2D material and strong photon absorption in the optical semiconductor, and eventual demonstration of the concept. This project will cooperate with other reputable research centres in EU and China; therefore the candidate may have a short period staying abroad financed by the partners. The outcome of this project will contribute to the biosensing technologies, which has attracted vast interests from both regional and international industries focusing on microsystem technology and environmental monitoring.

We are looking for candidates with Masters degree in electronics, bioelectronics, materials science, applied physics, applied chemistry or related subjects. Knowledge in MEMS or biomedical analysis is a plus.

Appointment is for a period of three years. The position does not include teaching duties.

Salary

PhD Research Fellow (code 1017): NOK 436 900 a year. Further promotion will be based on service in the position. In special cases, employment in code 1378 may be considered. Salary NOK 436 900 – 600 200 a year. A statutory contribution will be made from the employee’s salary to the state pension plan.
