PhD Research Fellowship in artistic research - Music or Visual Art

The Faculty of Fine Art has a PhD position vacant from October 1st 2018 for applicants who wish to obtain the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research.

Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD Research Fellow must participate in organized research training, and complete the PhD project during the period of employment.

The Faculty of Fine Art has two departments – Department of Contemporary Art and Creative Writing and Department of Music and Drama (the Music Conservatory). It offers bachelor and master programs in contemporary art, music performance and teacher training, drama and theatre. The faculty comprises a total of 92 scientific staff and technical/ administrative positions.

The position’s field of research/research project and other duties

We are seeking to recruit a Research Fellow in Music or Visual Art. A PhD in artistic research is intending to qualify candidates for artistic work, teaching and research positions in higher art education institutions and for other work engagement, which requires independent artistic expertise and insight. An applicant should normally hold a MA-degree, cf. the descriptions in the second cycle of the Norwegian Qualification Framework. On the basis of individual assessments, institutions may approve other equivalent competence as the basis for admission.

Since the objective of the PhD programme is to impart competence at associate professor level, applicants who already have documented competence at professor/associate professor level will be deemed to be overqualified for admission to the programme.

We expect the Research Fellow to deliver an independent artistic project of a high standard with national and international relevance to the subject area. In addition, a specific work of reflection also has a central place. The project should contribute to developing new insight, knowledge and/or experience. Awarding the diploma of completion is based on:

  • Approved completion of mandatory courses according to study plan
  • Approved independent artistic project and work of reflection
  • Approved public defence (Viva Voce)

 Qualifications requirements

An applicant should normally hold a MA-degree, cf. the descriptions in the second cycle of the Norwegian Qualification Framework.

Applicants must show full command English and satisfactory command in Scandinavian languages.

The applicant must submit a project plan including:

  • Project description max. 2500 words
  • Plan of progress
  • Budget
  • Documentation of specific needs for professional, artistic or material resources
  • Any plans for stays at other institutions
  • Proposal for an adequate format for public presentation of artistic result
  • Proposal for at least one supervisor including specification of affiliation to an active academic environment
  • Description of any legal or ethical issues

Working conditions

The standard period of employment is four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The research fellow will during the fourth year, distributed as 25 % of each year, teach or attend to other duties for the university.

An appointment for a three-year period may be decided on the time of entry.

Remuneration for the position of PhD Candidate is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017. In addition to taxes a compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

Assessment

An external expert committee assesses the application.

The committee shall submit an assessment of the project in relation to the following criteria:

  • Does the project have a relevant/interesting topic of significance to the subject area?
  • Has the applicant placed his/her project in the context of relevant discourses/traditions in the subject area?
  • How does the project address the requirement for reflection?
  • Is the project feasible within the stipulated timeframe and budget?
  • Has the applicant specified an adequate format for publication?
  • Will the project be able to produce an artistic result of a high standard with national and
  • international relevance?
  • Does the applicant have the artistic/academic qualifications required to carry out the project?

Qualified applicants may be called to an interview before the final assessment is being made.

  • Letter of application
  • CV (containing a complete overview of education, supervised professional training and professional work)
  • Documentation of post-educational independent artistic works
  • Project plan

All Non-Scandinavian and Non-English documentation must be certified and translated into a Scandinavian or English language.

UiT is working on establishing a new PhD-programme in artistic research. The person appointed this year will be admitted to the current Norwegian Artistic Fellowship Programme.
