The Department of Engineering and Safety has a Research Assistant position vacant, accession in the autumn 2017.

The position’s affiliation

Department of Engineering and Safety is organized under the Faculty of Science and Technology. The Department has approximately 70 employees with academic and administrative positions, and there are about 400 students in our various study programs. The position is located in the Department’s societal safety, security and environment team, and it is connected to the international project “Enablement besides Constraints: Human Security and a Cyber Multi-disciplinary Framework in the European High North (ECoHuCy)”.

The position’s field of research/field of work is within Societal safety and security.


Qualification requirements

For appointment as a Research Assistant the applicant requires:

  • Preferable master’s degree in the appropriate field (e.g. societal safety and security, sociology, political science etc.)

Skills of the applicants:

  • We search for a person
    • with good research abilities.
    • with good knowledge of qualitative and quantitative social science methods and methodologies.  
    • with good practical skills, such as ability to present research in international conferences in English.
    • with good knowledge and experience of the Arctic and/or Norwegian Arctic.
  • preferably with good understanding of issues related to cyber security, digitization, and sate-civil society relations is positive.

Language skills: 

Good communication skills in both written and spoken Norwegian and English.

Working conditions

The working hours shall be utilised for research, research-related activities and research administration.

The successful applicant must be willing to engage himself/herself in the ongoing development of his/her discipline and the university as a whole.

The remuneration for this position is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1020 Vitenskapelig assistent. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducte


 The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee’s mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants’ qualifications based on the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description drawn up for the position.

The applicants who are assessed as the best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview shall among other things aim to clarify the applicant’s personal suitability for the position. A trial lecture may also be held.
