SINTEF - Postdoc position in the project "NYKOS - New knowledge on sea disposal"

SINTEF Ocean conducts research and innovation related to ocean space for national and international industries. Our ambition is to continue Norways leading position in marine technology and biomarine research. We develop innovative solutions for sustainable use of the ocean in close partnership with industry and government. The company has 340 employees and with headquarters in Trondheim, and offices in Tromsø, Hirtshals, Oslo, Ålesund and Bergen.

Postdoc position in the project "NYKOS - New knowledge on sea disposal"

We are searching for a candidate for an 18-month postdoc position in the project "New knowledge on Sea Disposal" (NYKOS). The project is financed by the Norwegian Research Council (80%) and several mining industry companies in Norway (20%). The work will focus on the environmental risk associated with submarine mine tailings disposal and numerical modelling of tailings dispersion in the marine environment.

The project NYKOS is a five-year research project whose goal is to increase knowledge related to submarine fine-grained mine tailing disposal (www.sintef.no/nykos). The main objectives of the project are: Increase knowledge of the environmental effects of submarine deposition of fine grained tailings from the mineral industry Enable development of new sound environmental criteria and monitoring technologies that prepare for a sustainable mineral industry in Norway  The project consists of six work packages covering a broad range of environmental topics. The postdoc is a part of work package 5: "Modelling, impact acceptance criteria and risk aspects", and possible activities include: Modelling of mine tailing flocculation processes in the sea and bio-mineral interactions Dispersion modelling of mine tailings Dispersion and impact of production chemicals Development of risk analysis methods and acceptance criteria

Required qualifications of the candidate We are looking for a candidate with background in environmental modelling, numerical geophysics or similar, who has obtained her/his PhD degree. Desired background may include topics related to:  Numerical modelling of ocean processes Environmental risk assessment modelling Modelling of marine mine tailing discharges Flocculation dynamics Suspended sediment transport

The Department The candidate will work closely with researchers in the Department of Environmental Technology at SINTEF Ocean. The department engages in a wide range of research activities relating to experimental, monitoring and modelling studies of acute and regular discharges of marine pollution (oil, chemicals, sediments, mine tailings). We are a multi-disciplinary department of chemists, biologists, geophysicists, engineers and software developers. We also develop and offer the marine environmental models OSCAR and DREAM (www.sintef.no/DREAM).
